Hi and welcome to Let’s Word Up! Each day we post a word of the day to help you improve your English language skills.

Today’s word of the day is inward.

Inward is a descriptive word therefore it is an adjective.

Inward has two meanings. Firstly it describes something as directed or proceeding towards the inside. Secondly it describes something as existing within the mind, soul or spirit, often referring to things that are not outwardly expressed.

An example of the word inward used as an adjective in a sentence would be:

She bravely headed inward, leading the team into the cave to begin exploration.

Or, He appeared calm but he was keeping his inward fury under control.

Inward can also be used as an adverb with two meanings. Firstly it describes an action as happening towards the inside. Secondly it describes an action as happening into or towards the mind, spirit or soul.

An example of the word inward used as an adverb in a sentence would be:

The door swung inward and almost hit her in the face.

Or, You need to look inward and ask yourself if this is what you really want.

Synonyms: ingoing, concave, internal, veiled, personal.


Antonyms: outward, external, public, extrinsic, outgoing.
