Hi and welcome to Let’s Word Up! Each day we post a word of the day to help you improve your English language skills.

Today’s word of the day is poorly.

Adverbs are words that are used to describe verbs, therefore poorly is an adverb.

Poorly has two meanings. Firstly it describes something as being done in an unsatisfactory or inadequate manner. Secondly it describes someone or something as being with insufficient money.

An example of the word poorly used as an adverb in a sentence would be:

That was a poorly attempt at trying to help, we need to try harder than this.

Or, Not all families are fortunate enough to escape poorly beginnings like they did. .

Poorly can also be used as an adjective, describing someone as being unwell.

An example of the word poorly used as an adjective in a sentence would be:

He began to feel very poorly, it seemed that his stomach did not agree with his dinner.

Or, I felt guilty for not helping out, but I was too poorly and needed to rest.

Synonyms: badly, imperfectly, unsuccessfully, unwell, indisposed.


Antonyms: perfectly, excellently, splendidly, healthy, well.
