'Malum Opus' (translation: apple/disaster work) was written with the thought of a decaying apple in mind and my perceptions of decay, whether it be the withering wrinkles and crevices as the item falls apart, or the beautiful colours that appear in sprouting mould. The piece oscillates between consonance and microtonal dissonance, shifting the listener’s perceptions of the chords as they transition within these oscillations, gradually moving closer towards a microtonal decay and then eventual resolution as the apple becomes part of the earth.

q. pls introduce yourself:

Hey :) I am Ahmad Qatramiz, a Syrian-French artist based in Paris. Grew up in Syria, then France and I am a passionate person about life, nature, science, music, art and all things in between. 


q. is there a story behind the mix?

There’s no specific story behind the mix, apart that it depicts the music that I’ve been passionate about the last weeks. The tracks that are present are the deep sounds that enchant my ears and soul when I am chilling, and relaxing. It’s built around tracks, unreleased and released, of mine. There are multiple tracks of the same artists as well, and it’s in some way presenting my respect and admiration for these artists for deeply inspiring me.


q. what’s the best way to enjoy your mix?

On a bike ride (although it’s not the safest), or by the water somewhere in the woods :) 


q. describe a favourite object in your living room…

My formica wooden table, I don’t have it anymore because I moved out of my place and am currently living for a limited time at parent’s again, but I miss it so much. It was home for me. Very simple and lovely feeling.


q. are you working on any projects right now (music or not music)?

Absolutely, I am building a new label with friends called Sensory Cells. It’s based around sensory exploration of the subjective of each artist around specific topics. It will be an audio - visual - zine label, sharing scientific topics around senses either in their sociological aspect or physiological one. More to come very soon. It will be showcasing new microscopic art I’ve been developing lately.
Also, I am working on my second LP, which I think will come by a succession of 2-3 EPs on Sensory Cells before forming the LP. Stay tuned :)

The Specimen boxes mark the first reflection of Coppice's Vinculum as an ongoing project since 2010, spanning the first couple of phases of our collaborative work as Coppice. Vinculum grows from recorded and reduced sounds that highlight some aspects at the expense of others. The project has been recently praised: “The range of amplitude and density of each of the pieces contributes to a rather startling mix. Where similar projects would get bogged down in separate ‘songs’, the listener instead gets the sense of parts of a whole.” (Brian Beaudry, Cut and Run, 2012)

The boxes were custom-designed in collaboration with Andrew Furse, who hand-crafted each out of redwood. The inside bottom of the boxes is finished with cork. Each box holds the sounds of the Vinculum archive, on individual specimen slide-mounted CDs; and also as an instrument that sounds a unique pitch by means of an integrated brass free reed activated by the mouth. Core elements of Coppice’s sound palette are embodied in each box.
