Korg MS-20 Sample & Hold Madness. Running a MS-20 into a Boss DD-20 delay when I should be mixing. 

I routed the sample & hold signal to control the filter cutoffs on the high and low pass. Pushed the resonance pretty hard, so all of the randomly changing notes are from the filters self-oscillating.

I just picked up a Marantz PMD222 tape recorder to use as real-deal tape delay in my dawless setup. ⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣
⁣
Why? How? Why not just use a delay pedal like everyone else? ⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣
⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣
Since this is a 3 head recorder with separate record and play heads (instead of a combined play/record head), theres an audible delay between the input audio recorded by the record head and the output audio being played back with the play head a split second later. ⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣

The physical distance between the record and play heads in the machine results in the delay time, just like the “time” or “delay” knob on a delay pedal or plugin. Slowing the tape speed down increases the delay time, since it takes longer for the tape to travel from the record head to the play back head at the slower speed.⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣

Take this naturally delayed “from-tape” audio and send it back into the mixer to blend with the original sound and there you go - you have a tape delay. Great.⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣

The real fun begins when you introduce a feedback loop using the mixer, sending the tape delay back into itself - resulting in repeated delays. The great part about tape is that you have generation loss each time the sound is recorded back onto the tape. You lose frequencies here and there, introduce tape noise and pitch variations, the machine and tape distorts. Add in varying manufacturing tolerances and general age of the machine and it all coalesces into a unique and weirdly natural sound.⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣

You can then “play” the tape delay by adjusting the amount of feedback. Anywhere from a couple of repeats to a completely destroyed and distorted feedback drones, like I’m toying with towards the end of this clip.⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣
