Bootblacks put the multitracks for their last album out into the world last year. I took the track "Inextinguishable" and reworked it to reflect how 2021 often felt for me.

Bootblacks: Inextinguishable (find me)

I'm exploring the only drum machine I've ever pre-ordered. For the last week, I've spent 30-60 minutes a night building sounds from scratch and developing beats around those sounds. Today I decided to record something using one of the products of that exercise.

This is a stereo mix out of the Tempest (wishing I'd used individual outs, actually), some compression and limiting, with a smidge of reverb over the top. I basically did a bunch of adjustments during the playback of a single pattern, split it all up and rearranged it in Reaper. 

Drum-a-day Sketch 1

Last week, I slowly emerged from a dream I wouldn't remember, dragged out by this dual tone buzzing that, as I awoke, turned out to be my phone vibrating due to an incoming call. It sounded like this. Recorded live in the studio.

Calling

I took a break from drum synthesis on the Tempest and decided to mess around with buzzy monosynth sounds. I put together this singular pattern, which responds in an interesting way to beatwide parameter changes. Stereo output from the Tempest, modulated live, no post-processing, so it's going to be kind of dry and repetitive. 

It's a sweep

If you binged on Autechre for a week, you might sketch out something like this too. Composed on the DSI Tempest using all new sounds created on 3/30, iterating over a single pattern. Reverb + Compression added during post-processing.

The best part about my neighborhood

Using my modern analog drum machine to emulate my vintage analog drum machines. It's not 100% there yet, but it's getting pretty close.

Emulating a TR-606 with a Tempest

This is the first set of sounds and the first two-bar pattern I've programmed into my Tempest. I'm basically twiddling knobs and pressing buttons while the pattern loops. This is recording the Tempest into my M-Audio Projectmix via Vegas, with no post-processing aside from editing away some of the bits in between. This is all from a single pattern, adjusting/muting/rolling as it plays.
