“My name is Rayne Roberts and I’m a director, producer, and executive at Lucasfilm… Oh, and I LOVE your music.”

This email launched one the highlights of my life, inviting me to work with an incredible team and compose the score for Rayne's stunning short film about love and addiction named "It's Snowing Outside". I then travelled to San Francisco to complete the sound mix at the extravagant Skywalker Ranch with some of the best engineers in the world. The film is currently on the festival circuit, and I am delighted to share this track from the score with you.

Reflection

Two New Zealand artists from completely different musical worlds have combined forces to create a stunning and unique collaboration.

Former Midnight Youth lead vocalist and songwriter Jeremy Redmore possesses one of the most recognised voices in New Zealand music, while Levi Patel is a rising star in the world of modern classical and ambient music.

Written and recorded in a variety of ways over the course of three years - in-person and remote, in bedrooms, studios, cities and wilderness - the Migrations EP is a project of contrasts between sonic worlds, beginnings and endings, intimacy and distance.

“There are places this project took my voice to that it had never been before,” Redmore says.

Worlds Apart comes from the pair's Migrations EP.

This piece began much more complex than it is now and I had been working on it for a long time, struggling to get it right. Eventually I stripped away all of the extra notes and was left with the minimal piece that it is now.

Gravity

I never intended to expand beyond instrumental music and start writing songs. Perhaps that's why some songs on this album, like Stay Still, have elements that fall somewhere in between.

The song truly came to life when I worked with Matt Gunn to record eight incredible string players, the biggest group I've ever recorded. This bridge was the first time all day I let them fully open up, and their sound soared, all while maintaining a softness. We also captured some haunting double bass, pushing to bring out the "worst" parts of the bow sound.

Breathing even more life into the song was the incredible backing vocalist. She harmonised beautifully as always, but her subtle improvisation over my last line in the song gave me chills the first time I heard it, and the second, and third.

Stay Still

After over a decade of creating instrumental music, and three years of work, I've finally found my voice. Doubt About You is from my new album - Sailing on the Light of a Passing Star.

"With wings falling" is the third track from my latest release, A Shifting Lightness I.

A Shifting Lightness is a three-part series exploring the themes of Lightness and Memory.

When writing the music, I was living alone for 18 months near a small town in the North of New Zealand. Every morning I would go downstairs into my half-underground recording space, and from where I was writing I could only see through a single window above ground.

Spending so much time alone allowed me to take things slowly and to reflect on my past. It's strange what isolation can do to your thoughts, but it was rewarding to explore those aspects of myself through my music.

Words Like First Light

I am so proud to share with you my album A Shifting Lightness, now available on all digital platforms. A Landscape of Her Own is the ninth track on the album.

A Shifting Lightness is an exploration of lightness and memory, and my second full length album. From beginning the first demos in 2015, through spending 18 months living alone and writing the music, many months of recording and producing with almost 20 of the most talented people I know, and filming three music videos, it feels unreal that I’m finally releasing it today.

Thank you for all of your support and for encouraging me to release it despite the current crisis, and thanks to all of the talented people who contributed to the album. I hope you enjoy the music!
