Carol Williams is one of the first ladies of disco. The first female artist signed to Salsoul Records, her 1976 album “’Lectric Lady” on the label was the first of any solo act, her single ‘More’ was one of the genre’s first ever 12”s. Her second album, 1979’s ‘Reflections Of Carol Williams’, saw her part company with Salsoul and assume full creative control for the first time in her career.

Employing her talents as a writer, as she had a decade earlier when part of girl group The Geminis,  ‘Reflections Of Carol Williams’ is a much more personal statement, full of richly orchestrated disco songs and several mid-tempo numbers just waiting to be rediscovered by soul and disco fans alike.

With 1978’s ‘Love Has Come My Way’ Carol had scored a hit with producer Tony Valor and it was to his distinct talents she returned for ‘Reflections Of…’ Now rightly regarded as one of disco’s most important early producers (not least thanks to Maryann Farra’s legendary 1976 LP for Brunswick), Valor’s Latin-edged percussion, prominent rhythm guitar and expert orchestration run throughout  ‘Reflections Of Carol Williams’. High tempo disco hit ‘Dance The Night Away’ kicks things off, but later the more cute and soul-edged ‘Love Constitution’ and ‘I Get It’ reveal their allure, particularly upon repeated listens.

Hailing from Madrid @javi-frias began Djing in the 90's and hasn't stopped playing since. Over the last decade he has also worked tirelessly to sharpen his skills as a producer and has since has a string of sold out releases. In 2017 he took things even further launching his own label Night Shift Records which focuses on reworks and edits of disco and house.

We spoke to Javi about his career, his label and his club night Discotizer, he also put together a sublime mix for us.

LV Mixtape 133 - Javi Frias [Night Shift Records]

Last summer we reached out to a wide range of label artists and like-minded producers, gathering together the previously unreleased tracks they offered up on the Collective Sounds compilation. That set was hugely successful, spending some time at the top of the Junodownload sales chart, so we have decided to do it all over again with a sequel that’s every bit as alluring as its predecessor.

Featuring a range of like-minded heads old and new, the 15-track set draws together an eclectic selection of exclusive cuts rooted in Boogie Café’s love of soul, deep house, broken beat, boogie and jazz-funk. You’ll find up-tempo workouts aplenty of course, but also some hazier and more seductive tracks that bob along at an altogether slower tempo.

You’ll find a number of artists local to Boogie Café’s Bristol base present, with Alfresco Disco’s Lord Leopard laying down the loose-limbed, bruk-up sweatiness of “Magic Hands”, Good Vibrations Music chief Sean McCabe delivering piano-laden deep house thrills on “Notes From The Universe” and JMorrison smashing together dense percussion and razor-sharp funk samples on “Mullet Frenzy”.

The quality threshold never dips throughout, with highlights coming from both seasoned veterans and younger or lesser-known artists. In the former category you’ll find the drowsy downtempo beats of Chezz, the synth-laden deep house warmth of West Country stalwarts BRS and the jazzy broken beat/soul fusion of Lord Byron and Colonel Red. 

Of the new breed’s contributions, make sure you check the inspired, near Balearic synth-funk of Edleigh’s “Attenbro”, the skipping U.S garage heat of Funkayon’s “Shame” and the sub-heavy house strut of Haze City’s weighty “Strutt”. These are just our suggestions though; you’ll find plenty more gems stretched out across the entirety of Collective Sounds 2.
