Dr. Bruce marks the sad passing in April 2017 of Bob Taylor, the innovative father of much of the digital technology that we use every day. Bob funded Doug Engelbart's lab in the mid 1960s creating the first interactive computing information environment using a mouse and conceived of and headed the ARPANET project, forerunner of the Internet. In the 70s he directed the Xerox PARC Computer Science Lab which brought us the Alto. the first networked personal computer, and ran DEC labs in the 80s-90s launching the first Web search engine before Google. Your Dr. Bruce sadly reports the loss of a dear friend and neighbor of these past 25 years: Fred McPherson. I first met Fred in the 90s when I first moved to Boulder Creek. Some time later I learned that he was a major figure in the counter-cultural movements in Santa Cruz in the 60s and 70s. Working with a set of early environmental activists, Fred had helped lead efforts to prevent a major new highway, a full three or four lane expressway actually, from being built up into the San Lorenzo Valley where I now live. Some years ago Fred shared with me the map and General Plan from 1967 that would have had our valley turn into much higher density housing, removing all the old vacation cabins and farms, like mine. This was an alternate future that was the fate of most of America, which between the early 50s and the 70s was reworked into the suburbia-freeway-shopping mall matrix that dominates life today. Only a few areas were spared this treatment and the San Lorenzo Valley was one of them. My enthrallment when driving into this valley back in 1994 seeking my home base for the rest of my days was sourced in this earlier effort to preserve the valley against the developer's bulldozers. The San Lorenzo Valley is a true jewel of old California, and it survives and thrives right in the San Francisco Bay Area! The Levity Zone returns after six months of life-changing events for Dr. Bruce including his move in with a new love into a new house, the Gandalf Abode at Ancient Oaks (aka a "COVID romance"). The Zone welcomes in the new Levity Salons. These Salons are live online Zoom sessions which started late in 2019 with Dr. Bruce's Patreon community. This Salon (#4) featured the timely theme of Pandemics and the Human Future, it being recorded in March 2020 during the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic. 073-LevityZone Salon4: Pandemics and the Human Future

Dr. Bruce returns from evacuation to tell the dramatic, traumatic tale of the horrific CZU fire nearby, coming within a mile of Ancient Oaks. Climate shocks come home as giant redwoods burn bottom to top for the first time in a thousand years. A pattern break, and then another, and another will impact and transform our lives, individually and collectively as we move deeper into the century. Dr. Bruce himself is entering into his own pattern break, a month of breaking from his mostly mental life into a new state with nowhere to go, nothing to do. How often do we just... stop? While in this state he plans to test a hypothesis, that there is something deep within, and casting its tendrils far and wide in our lives: the Field. The Field is a probabilistic ninja, hurdling walls of improbability to shape our futures. Our focused attention in the Field could just possibly pull us through the coming siege of pattern breaks, forcing us to survive and thrive as the body human moves toward life and light.
