OM MARIT KAPLA
Marit Kapla är född 1970, uppvuxen i Osebol och bosatt i Göteborg. Hon har varit konstnärlig ledare för Göteborgs filmfestival och en av två redaktörer för kulturtidskriften Ord & Bild. 2019 publicerade Kapla sin debutbok, Osebol som vann Augustpriset: Årets svenska skönlitterära bok.

Osebol är en berättelse om vår tid. En litterär sensation från världens mittpunkt. Osebol är en by vid Klarälven i norra Värmland. I boken möter läsaren så gott som alla byns vuxna invånare, intervjuade av Marit Kapla som själv är uppvuxen där. Osebol är en säregen läsupplevelse som saknar motsvarighet. Intervjuerna har kokats ned till lyriska vittnesmål som går rakt in i hjärtat. Boken blir till ett slags prisma som kastar nytt ljus på livet. Det är är färgsprakande, levande och lämnar ingen läsare oberörd.

Having grown up in the Scottish Highlands and performed in various folk bands, The Summer Isles and the folk tradition are deeply rooted in Mairearad Green’s composition. As a result, Mairearad has produced a beautiful new solo album, Summer Isles, a seamless and exciting progression from her previous work which is released on February 26th 2016 via Buie Records.

2014 saw Mairearad spend many weeks researching stories from the islands; as she located publications and poetry to help set the direction for Summer Isles. The album is an exquisite collection of acoustic, folk and cinematic vignettes that create an overwhelming listening experience. Each track tells a story of the islands’ history, embracing a contrasting emotion from track to track.

Mairearad (piano, accordion, bag pipes, vocals) is joined by a number of guest musicians including legendary singer/songwriter King Creosote, Hector McInnes (vocals), Ross Saunders (bass), Scott MacKay (drums), Jo Nicolson (clarinet), Pat McGarvey (banjo), Mike Vass (fiddle), and Annie Grace, Jeana Leslie and Hamish Napier (backing vocals). Combining each musicians’ stylistic background, producer Iain Hutchinson has created a refined and inventive sound that faultlessly captures Mairearad’s vision.

Living in an area steeped in culture and local traditions, Mairearad was introduced to folk music at an early age. Renowned for her deft and lyrical accordion style, as well as her dextrous piping, Mairearad is in great demand, not only as a performer, but also as a composer. She regularly performs alongside multi-instrumentalist Anna Massie and has previously toured with Eddi Reader and Karine Polwart to name a few. Mairearad has also been dominating the folk festival world; performing at Celtic Connections Festival, Cambridge Folk Festival, Hebridean Celtic Music Festival,  and Tonder Folk Festival.

Summer Isles is out on February 26th 2016 via Buie Records.

In April 2017, with her 21-year-old brother as intern tour manager & two Canadian companions, 25-year-old Rachel Sermanni found herself in Northern British Columbia, driving highways, camping by rivers or lakes, climbing hills and playing gigs. There, for the first time, she saw the Aurora Borealis, a spectacle shared by the locals of Two Mile, a tiny town by the waters of the Skeena River where Rachel was preparing for a gig.

That day unfolded in a succession of activities involving the natural surroundings, observing the local wildlife and quiet contemplation accompanied by a cup of coffee back at the house. Rachel then settled on the wooden floor to tickle her Martin guitar with a recurring refrain before the evening performance revealed its magic. Later that night Brian the house owner informed her that there were ‘…colours in the sky now’. Still swaddled in the warmth of her sleeping bag, Rachel made way, with mat, hat and blankets, to the centre of the garden. They watched the light play, ooze and throb in that ineffable way for most of the night. At some point the phenomenon dissolved back to a clear, cold, star-struck sky. Rachel left Brian in a whisky stupor. She came to the quiet dark of the living room, sat before the soft red heat of the stove and wrote Lay My Heart.

The song was played next night and has become entirely part of Rachel’s repertoire ever since.

Lay My Heart, the single, includes the original Garageband recording from that early morning. The official recording, however, was made back in Scotland with dear friends Jennifer Austin on piano, Laura Wilkie & Siobhan Anderson on fiddle, Toby Shippey on trumpet, Mike Guest and David Jack as studio creators, engineers and all round handy men.

Half of all physical and digital proceeds will go to the BIGproject, an organisation who Rachel has had the honour to work with over the years, based in Broomhouse Primary School, Edinburgh.
