The Find Magazine is very proud to unveil a new compilation series focused on progressive jazz beatstrumentals. To showcase beatmaking as both an evolution and revolution of jazz music, we have asked some of our favourite artists from around the world to craft beats that go beyond blending loops.

The result is a small collection of intricate and forward-thinking instrumentals paying homage to music legends like DJ Shadow, Ahmad Jamal, Nujabes, Yusef Lateef, J Dilla, Bill Evans, and many more in the realm of both jazz and hip hop.

The improvisational and experimental aesthetics of jazz are modernized through the concepts of hip hop production and sampling, where artists recontextualize old/new sounds to create an original and cohesive ‘beat’. Each artist was challenged to concoct a progressive instrumental piece inspired by jazz music.

This chapter of Jazzvolution is the first in an ongoing series that will seek to explore the boundaries of hip hop and jazz fusion, as well as generate awareness and support for various charities and social development initiatives. To celebrate "Full Cycle"'s 10th anniversary I've decided to share some of the many beats I did at the time I was working on it.

It was such an important moment to me as I was living in Berlin half a year for my art studies.
I've never produced that much, probably made 5 beats a day for 6 months.

Today I've carefully selected some of my favorite joints from that period. Some of them were really close to be part of the LP, some others I've totally forgot but re-discovered when I realized how fast time flies.

I hope you'll enjoy this batch of instrumentals.

The Content (L)abel presents a dynamic new split EP from Lex (de Kalhex) and Dday One, titled "Parallel Presence". The EP's title reveals some clues: 'parallel' refers to something similar to another, while 'presence' imagines a thing that exists but is not seen. These two producers, as kindred spirits, strive to work on this deeper level. "Parallel Presence" is an expressive step forward, presenting intricate beats, thoughtful samples, and otherworldly vibes colluding towards a mesmerizing whole. 

Los Angeles based producer Dday One bookends the EP with "Key Signature" and "Moving Force", displaying his undisputed acumen for rhythm construction and skillful arrangement. The opening track, in particular, is a beat-head's manna, featuring a serpentine bass line, staccato vocals, and heavy piano riffs, all synchronized at a headnodic tempo. Alex Besikian aka Lex (de Kalhex) is a visual artist, producer, and MC, known as the co-founder of Paris's Akromégalie Records and 1/3 of seminal French hip hop group Kalhex. His cuts "Brilliant Circles" – with its night owl drum beat, tinkling electric keys, and gentle horn line – and "Solstice" – featuring ringing tones, bluesy guitar riffs, velvet saxophone, and some serious rhythm play – uncannily compliment Dday One's contributions, cementing "Parallel Presence" as an EP best ingested from front to back. 

Visual and audio art also come together in the project's cover design, which was a collaborative effort of the two producers. The Content (L)abel aims to bring together distinct forms of expression, with sound, thought, and visual art combining through the imprint's releases. "Parallel Presence" is just the latest evidence.

"The album is called 'Digital Church’, which is not at all related to a Christian church but is instead a metaphor for a way of life, and in it, Linn interlocks natural sounds for organic-sounding percussion, using sounds like trees, fire and water layered over his own rhythmic beats. The style is intended to help people understand each other's beliefs by colliding and mixing together.

The album's title track echoes the concept by blending the artist signature lo-fi vibes and rich musical chords with tranquil mellow ornaments into one altogether dreamy soundscape.

Lex (de Kalhex) - To The People

Alex Besikian aka is a visual artist, producer and MC, known as the co-founder of Akromégalie Records and 1/3 of seminal French hip-hop group Kalhex.

Producer of critically acclaimed instrumental albums since 2011, Lex has been part of notable compilations such as Toru Hashimoto’s "Urban-Mellow FM 77.4 » (2014) or Radio Juicy’s « The Chronic » (2017).

Close to Nujabes' entourage, he collaborated with worldwide artists such as Grap Luva & Rob-O (from Pete Rock’s INI), Shing02, Uyama Hiroto, Dday One, Substantial & Mathematik (Down Ta Erf).

Represented in Japan by Takumi Koizumi (Hydeout Productions’ ex-manager), Lex performs regularly there and in Europe for over a decade.
