Keeping Busy

I accidentally created this soundscape composition during a train journey from Bristol to London on Friday 18th September 2020.

I was working on a track and my laptop microphone was accidentally enabled. It was routed through a series of audio plugins including a reverse reverb. The reverse reverb effect was creating a sense of an alternate reality. I was stunned instantly by the warped audio that I was hearing and how much it resonated with how I was feeling. 

I usually enjoy train journeys and strangely look forward to them. This is the first train I've taken since the COVID-19 lockdown. I am saddened by the constant reminders to wear masks and to keep your distance, the empty glances from fellow passengers that don't want to have chit chat and the sense of dread that sits within me. This train journey felt alien to me.

However there was comfort knowing that we are all in this together and still if I focussed enough, I could relax into the journey and enjoy the small pleasures in life. BREAAAATHE! Somehow I managed to find some inner peace on the train. Whether this train journey gives me COVID or not, I am grateful for the journey.

The modern journey : Bristol - London 18.9.20 (soundscape composition)

As urbanisation propels the modern world, the soundscapes of our cities are evolving. There have been numerous connections made between the detriments of noise pollution with regard to both mental and physical health, whilst less is known about what constitutes a positive soundscape experience. 

This 15 minute acousmatic soundscape documents the findings from a research project exploring the soundscape perception of Eastville Park in Bristol. The high value of the greenspace and the sounds identified by the participants was recognised. In addition, the users expressed that experiencing the soundwalking practise was valuable to them on a personal level and increased their engagement with Eastville Park lake and its surroundings.
