“Postcards” spark an image of travel, adventure, distance, and connection. An analog way of reaching the ones we love. And this particular song is about waiting for a postcard or wanting to reach someone and not knowing where they are. Before we shared our lives on social media, a postcard is much like a bookmark in a story; a token of love and longing. In a moment of pause and reflection, we wait for the story to pick back up again.

Desde Lejos is a poetic samba describing the metaphoric river of how our good intentions and prayers make their way. The lyrics describe the way our thoughts, as though they ride a current of hope that creates healing. Passing through the obstacles and whirlpools, as rivers channeling the power of prayer.

“A decade ago, I had a very powerful dream. Outside of my body, I was flying between memories in my life, witnessing my mother singing to me as a baby, playing the guitar to my friends in high school, humming in the Utah canyons or in a Colorado hot spring. Throughout these visions a melody and words were repeating, “Oh this is it, and it’s all it’s gonna be, thank you, thank you, thank you, thank you, found you again.” This song wove through my entire life thus far, leaving a clear message, that this was all one deep breath. That this human experience is all at once, that every goodbye is temporary and the moments where love comes clearly to the surface are sacred. Years later, I held on to this melody and these words, convinced they were only in my head and singing them aloud might spoil their significance. One night, in the comfort and safety of my bandmates' presence, I sang them aloud. The girls joined in and ushered the song into this world. It became a mantra to us, translating the words for our friends in Brazil and on occasion ending shows with it as a closing prayer.” - Madeleine

This version of what we call, “The Thank You Song,” was created during a recording session in Emilie’s home. Lydia set up a mobile studio and we recorded the vocals all together. “We wanted to explore taking the song out of an a capella mantra and find the music that fit the dream-like world it came from.” (Madeleine) Along one wall of Emilie’s studio apartment hangs string instruments from around the world. To give you a picture, an electric guitar is mounted on a hook alongside a Brazilian fiddle called the Rabeca (ha-becca). A chekeré is hanging from the same hook with vining plants draped across. We started picking up instruments and exploring whatever fit with the soundscape we were creating. What found its way into the song was a Brazilian cavaquinho, banjo, electric guitar, acoustic guitar, tama (talking drum) and many different shakers. A few months later, Lydia took the song to our friend and collaborator, Josh Jacobson, and together they finished the mix and master.

Four voices coalesce. Rooted in rhythm. The women of Ley Line transcend language and genres to create a sound that seems to emerge from deep within the earth. Raised on the North American traditions of blues, folk and soul and inspired by their world travels, Ley Line creates a global soundscape; blending rhythms and influences from Brazil, Latin America and West Africa. Ley Line’s multilingual performances unite audiences around the world.

Ley Line is the musical merging of two duos. Austinites Kate Robberson and Emilie Basez met twin sisters Madeleine and Lydia Froncek at the Telluride Bluegrass Festival in 2013. Since reuniting in Austin, Texas in 2015, Ley Line has been weaving together their individual journeys into a collective vision. Through intimate live performances and multilingual lyrics, Ley Line’s music inspires connection across the peaks and valleys of the human experience.
