Trio

This is an extract of a recording of my piece Miniature #4 (for Flute). It was recorded by Iwona Glinka and will be available on the disc, 'One Minute' from various platforms.

Performed and recorded by The Phoenix Ensemble at the Lviv Philharmonic, Lviv, Ukraine on 14th April 2017.

#2 (for String Quartet)

This piece presents an abstract factory for the production of music. Breath is stored, transfered and used to produce sound. However, unlike the human-machines (the wind players and actors), the string player does not require breath to produce. So what do they do? They are the boss. Unable to relate to the experiences of the workers and motivated by higher production and greater profit. the boss pushes the workers harder and harder. What can they do? How can they resist the bosses unrealistic demands? Find union.

After this concert has concluded, the composer urges everyone to join a union to safeguard theirs and others labour rights. For those already members, demand your union works for the betterment of yours and others working conditions.

This extract comes from an informal performance of the piece at The Whitworth, Manchester on 11th March 2019 by The Vonnegut Collective and Animikii Theatre.

Quartet

This is an extract of my piece 'Coworking / Cooperation / Collaboration' which is written for open score (any instruments). In this movement, the musicians choose what they play from a selection of materials and, guided by the conductor, collaborate to create the music. It was performed by CoMA Manchester on 8th March, 2020 at the Martin Harris Centre, Manchester and was conducted by Adam Swayne.

Collaboration

This is a setting of poetry by Joey Frances I wrote back in Summer, 2019. It's a really rough recording with me (not a professional singer) just belting it out the best I can because Covid-19 and fuck mortgage holidays for landlords!

land no lords

Born in 1993, Liam Grogan is a composer from Bristol. Having graduated in 2016 with a First-class Bachelors in Music, Liam Grogan was awarded the Raymond Warren Prize for Composition and the University of Bristol Undergraduate Prize for Composition. In the same year, his piece Miniature #4 won a competition to be performed and recorded by the founder of the Phasma-Music Ensemble and international flautist Iwona Glinka in Athens. In 2017 Liam was a finalist at the KLK New Music Shostakovich Competition, having his work #2 (for String Quartet) performed at Lviv Philharmonic in Lviv, Ukraine. In this year Liam also received the Raymond Warren Prize for Composition for a second time in record of his achievement during his post-graduate studies at the University of Bristol. In February 2018, he was awarded a Distinction for the completition of his MA in Music under the tutelage of Prof. John Pickard. Currently he is undertaking a Ph.D. at the University of Manchester with Dr. Kevin Malone. His research is into how combinations of Music and Theatre can be used to convey political messages in concert music. He is also one of the founding members of The Manchester Forum (www.themanchesterforum.co.uk)
