A study on motivic material from Virtual Riot's 'Sugar Rush'.

I wanted to create something as original as possible while still utilizing recognizable material from the original.

This work combines core aspects of melodic dubstep with elements of downtempo drum & bass, and utilizes a less common drum & bass/2-step rhythm in the climax. The second buildup section is also a contrast to what one may usually find in similar tracks, as instead of building up it breaks down, almost disappearing before the second climax (drop).

Virtual Riot - Sugar Rush (Embrace One Remix)

Half Life (Glen Marks) and I wanted to explore the darker possibilities of the melodic dubstep medium, drawing on elements from psy trance and other psychedelic styles of EDM. In our choice of harmony and thematic material, and mainly in the sound effects that we chose, we aimed to accomplish this. Although looking back there are definitely less aggressive elements than in tracks like Bloodlust by Killsonic, the overall the result was a pleasing effort.

Gus Robins (a long-term student of mine in music theory, composition & EDM production) and I wanted to elaborate on the Seven Lions original as we felt that there was room for variation. The only material used to create this edit was the WAV of the original mix, with no other synthesized material.

It was a challenge given the nature of the original, although we feel that we did well with what we had available.

A selection of EDM that speaks to me as an artist, and in turn my very last release as Embrace One.

Embrace One - World Without End [Final Edition]

This is the final World Without End mix I'll be doing (seriously).

To me, this is the furthest the concept can be taken without becoming distracting. In previous mixes I have attempted things such as mashing up every single track, however there were elements of blend that I was not satisfied with in these cases. This mix has the widest variety of styles yet, as well as the most tempo changes. Mixing is done in key almost always where possible, and when modulations occur they are either done via the cycle of fifths, or via other closely related keys such as the relative major/minor. The 2017 version is also the longest, being 30 minutes longer than the others. Additionally, almost every track is edited in some way, whether sections have been removed or sections of other tracks overlaid. I have not however gone so far as to use gimmicky special fx such as chopping as I did in the previous version, as it is not always that appealing and can become distracting. My focus was simply to reveal the best sections of each work while retaining interest for as long as possible.

This final recording from my 'Return to the Baxter' is an improvisation drawing on aspects of the chorale, such as smooth vertical voice leading and singable lines, and combining them with more modern techniques such as clusters and pandiatonicism. It is instrumental music of worship, and is dedicate to our Lord and Saviour, Jesus and our father in Heaven.
