Children in care, and adults with experience of care, are some of the most vulnerable people in our society. Research shows that the majority have experienced maltreatment and extreme adversity, which predicts poor educational and health outcomes in later life; those with experience of care are over-represented in prisons, hospitals or psychiatric care, and in unemployment figures. Only 6% go to university at 18, compared to nearly 50% of young people who are not care experienced.

One could also take the view that conferences are like a family gathering. Getting everyone together for Pesach (Passover) or Thanksgiving can be a chore and the time spent together can be uneven. But most of the time everyone is happy and there is nothing diabolical about the get together. So why worry if the people of JOFA have a conference every few years?


But my discomfort about the possible groupthink created by conferences persists. Are the women who come to the JOFA conference being forced to espouse a party line? Attendance may foster stridency that compromises open dialogue. Do the women and men leave the conference drawing sharp lines between themselves and the rest of the community and limit consideration and implementation of constructive solutions for how to live meaningful Modern Orthodox Jewish lives?


Nonetheless, the temptation to control things is strong. We live in a spinning world. Watching Audrey pull the conference together, negotiate with speakers, coordinate different activities, and ensure that the food was right and enough, made me realize that a good conference is not meant to reach a bottom line. Instead, it creates a temporary shared community where people can get together, think out loud, argue, persuade, and return home richer for the experience than when they arrived.


There is widespread recognition in city planning of the need for open public squares where people can gather freely and interact. They may play Frisbee, drink overpriced coffee, read a magazine, or just sit and chat there. In thriving cities, these places literally buzz with activity year round. Healthy living spaces from Greece to Greensboro have incorporated this feature into the architecture of the community.

 10-15% of each year's student intake were identified as strugglers. Significant independent predictors of students being in this category were negative comments in the academic reference (likelihood ratio 2.25, 95% confidence intervals 1.44 to 3.50), lower mean examination grade at A level (2.19, 1.37 to 3.51), and the late offer of a place (1.98, 1.19 to 3.30). Male sex was a less significant risk factor (1.70, 1.09 to 2.65) as was a lower grade at GCSE science (2.13, 1.12 to 4.05). In UK students whose ethnicity was known, not being white was a significant predictor of struggling (2.77, 1.52 to 5.05) but the presence of negative comments was not. Age at entry to the course and the possession of a previous degree were not predictive.


In comparing strugglers with controls we chose to analyse our strugglers as a single group because there was no definitive way to split them up. Their problems comprised academic, personal, medical, or social components in varying degrees. Hence, we could define a struggler only as a student who failed to make satisfactory progress and was identified in any one of the categories listed. We accept that there may be subtle associations between the categories and the predictors that we were unable to identify, but a subgroup analysis of those strugglers who attended the academic progress committee and those whose course was terminated showed that the same range of factors emerged as predictors of struggling (see bmj.com for results).


Pastoral support at Nottingham includes informal meetings with personal tutors and more intensive formal mechanisms, yet some students still hide, or deny, their difficulties until they reach a crisis point. In the course of this research we noticed a high incidence of depressive illnesses in strugglers, which is of particular concern. We intend to review our strugglers and our pastoral practices more closely to see what further support could be offered, perhaps as targeted interventions to those at greatest risk. Research elsewhere has identified personal, social, cultural, and financial pressures that may particularly affect students from non-mainstream backgrounds and that may need to be addressed explicitly and proactively.18,19 Failure in clinical examinations may have a sex related or cultural basis because the current emphasis on patient centred, empathetic care may be more natural for women than for men20 and may present a considerable difficulty for students from more paternalistic cultures.21-24 Language barriers may be important because fluency in standard English may not be adequate for medical and colloquial needs.25-27

However, her companions alienate themselves from Ginormica's family due to their inexperience with the real world, while Derek callously breaks off his engagement with Ginormica by claiming that he cannot marry someone who would overshadow his career. Initially heartbroken, Ginormica finally realizes that her life was even better as a monster and she promises the other monsters to never underestimate herself again. Suddenly, Ginormica is pulled into Gallaxhar's ship by a tractor beam. Insectosaurus tries to save her, but is shot down by the ship and seemingly killed.

With the first Texas Chainsaw Massacre, Director Tobe Hooper created a horrifying world (based on a true story) that has yet to be matched by any of the movie's sequels, reboots, or remakes - all of which largely complicate the franchise's overall story. Yet, even throughout these confusing and loosely connected timelines, The Texas Chainsaw Massacre franchise still holds up as one of the most popular horror franchises of all time and the Sawyer family is often at the center.


The original 1974 film is a horror classic that introduced audiences to the Sawyer Family, the franchise's terrifying family of incestuous cannibals. Since then, the various timelines within the Texas Chainsaw Massacre movies have also led to confusion regarding the full extent of the Sawyer Family tree - and the family's various offshoots. It can be tough to figure out who is related to whom within the Sawyer Family - as well as the Slaughter Family and Hewitt Family, which are essentially rebrands of the original Sawyer Family.


In the original 1974 film, the lead villain, Leatherface, is living with his father and brothers Drayton and Nubbins Sawyer. His brothers are killed in the original film's continuity. However, In Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2 (1986), Robert "Bobby" Sawyer, better known as "Chop Top," is introduced as another one of Leatherface's brothers. Another brother, Edward "Tex" Sawyer, is introduced in Leatherface: Texas Chainsaw Massacre III (1990), which also introduces Leatherface's daughter, Babi Sawyer. This film also features an extended family who calls Leatherface "Junior."


That was kind of confusing and off-putting on its own but things get taken up another notch with 2016's Texas Chainsaw 3D. This worked as a direct sequel to the original 1974 film and here, Leatherface is revealed to be Jedidiah "Jed" Sawyer. In this film, it is revealed that Heather Miller (Alexandra Daddario) is actually Edith Rose Sawyer, a cousin of Jed's. She ultimately helps him kill those responsible for the deaths of the other members of the original Sawyer family. Jedidiah Sawyer is also the character seen in 2017's Leatherface.





Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Next Generation is where things first start to get confusing, with Leatherface living with a new family called Slaughters instead of Sawyers. It's difficult to place this film on the timeline. Regardless of where it lies on the timeline, the Slaughter Family is the one with Matthew McConaughey and The Illuminati. The Slaughter family is comprised of brothers Leatherface, Vilmer Slaughter, W.E. Slaughter, and Vilmer's lover, Darla, as its main members. Due to the flawed continuity of the series, the appearances of W.E, Grandpa Sawyer, and Sally Hardesty Enright in The Next Generation seem to contradict the events of Leatherface: The Texas Chainsaw Massacre III.

As a game GD fits me well, more complex than Diablo 3 but less complex than path, and with your great explanations I finally feel like I am starting to have a grasp of the underlying systems.
