House Aflame

Perfect Body formed in Cardiff, early 2017, inspired by the sonic experimentation of bands like My Bloody Valentine, Stereolab, and The Brian Jonestown Massacre. Their earliest performances took place in Cardiff’s underground, often in practice spaces and house parties: So, by the time Perfect Body emerged on the music scene, they had already sculpted a distinctive sonic identity. The attention gained from their first single, ‘Getting Cold’, saw them supporting the likes of Jen Cloher, Slowcoaches, and The Wytches.

Perfect Body’s sound is characterized by it’s noisy, psychedelic guitar playing; icy, ethereal synthesizers; and a muscular, yet dynamic rhythm section. Their three vocalists, each with their own style and identities, ensure that Perfect Body’s performances are varied and engaging. Perfect Body is a wall of noise, hazing over and obscuring what is, at it’s core, pop-oriented songwriting.

Acerbic yet winsome Scottish indiepoppers The Just Joans return with the dazzlingly maudlin The Private Memoirs and Confessions of the Just Joans, a deeply personal collection of songs that hazily recall the past and contemplate the futility of the future. 

A titular twist on the classic gothic horror novel The Private Memoirs and Confessions of a Justified Sinner by compatriot James Hogg, the new album is the follow-up to 2017’s You Might Be Smiling Now… and contains the kind of melodies and mockery that led Uncut to class the band as the point at which “Stephin Merritt lies down with The Vaselines.”

At the forefront remain the mischievous lyrics and heartfelt vocals of siblings David and Katie Pope, aided and abetted by Chris Elkin on lead guitar, Fraser Ford on bass guitar and Jason Sweeney on drums. Yet it is the recruitment of multi-instrumentalist Arion Xenos and guest appearance of Butcher Boy’s Alison Eales to arrange strings that have helped elevate the band’s music to new heights. 

Their progression is most noticeable on lead single “Dear Diary, I Died Again today”, a painfully beautiful admission of everyday anxiety and “When Nietzsche Calls”, the triumphant cry of a spurned lover revelling in the misery of their ex to a backdrop of trumpets and violins. The juxtaposition of the fragility shown in these tracks with the menace of “Wee Guys (Bobby’s Got A Punctured Lung)” – an observation and understanding of the casual violence that once cast a shadow over the band’s hometown – highlights The Just Joans’ ability to seamlessly flip between sensitivity and danger, and sums up why Highway Queens described them as the “perfect Glasgow kiss.”

The Private Memoirs and Confessions of the Just Joans is a veritable smorgasbord of misery, longing and unrequited love; stories of small town resentments, half-forgotten school friends, failing relationships and awkward workplace conversations. As David explains: “It’s a collection torn from the pages of the diary I haven’t kept over the past 25 years. There are songs about places and people I vaguely remember, feelings I think that I once may have felt and the onset of middle-aged ennui.”

Despite entering new territory with the addition of brass and strings, they have nevertheless maintained the DIY ethos that made them darlings of the underground indie-pop scene, with each song on the album recorded and produced by the band in various gloomy bedrooms around Glasgow.

Wedi gwario dros ddau ddegawd yn archwilio cerddoriaeth o bob math, Fuzz Pop, Bedsit indie, Canu Gwlad, Synth Pop, Gwerin Seicodelig, Ol Pync (ie rwyn dipyn o bioden gerddorol!!) a ffurfio ysbryd cerddorol annibynnol, unigolyddol a rhyddfrydol. Fe ddes i sylweddoli nad y llwyfan oedd f'amgylchedd naturiol ond yn hytrach cynorthwyo artistiaid ifanc, a'u codi i amlygrwydd gan eu galluogi i gyflawni eu breuddwydion cerddorol unigol. Daeth y foment 'Eureka' pan glywais yr artistiaid (i gyd o fewn ychydig wythnosau a'm syfrdanodd) sydd nawr yn galw Libertino yn gartref creadigol iddynt eu hunain .Roedd yn RHAID i'r artistiad yma gael eu clywed gan weddill y byd as roedd yn RHAID i mi weithio gyda nhw. Roedd yn un o'r munudau prin hynny mewn bywyd lle mae'r artistiad, eu cerddoriaeth a'u hestheteg yn cyd-blethu i ffurfio cyfanwaith perffaith i'r gwrandawr. We love in no particular order: Pandas, peanut butter ice cream, all things vinyl, supportive open embrasive communities, gin (cheaper the better!), popeth Cymreig, our very inspiring Artists or anyone who puts themselves out there to make this world a more sonically beautiful  place, Chorus pedals, you know...like it's 1985! They are back in right?! And an unwavering faith in the life changing power of the 3-minute pop song! 
 
'After spending over two decades exploring music from diverse extremes; Fuzz Pop, Bedsit Indie, Country, Synth Pop, Psych Folk, Post Punk (yes bit of a musical magpie here!!!) and honing an individual, independent free musical spirit, I realised that my natural environment was not the stage but rather helping young artists, lifting them up to the limelight, enabling them to achieve their individual musical visions. The "Eureka" moment was hearing the artists (all in the space of a few gloriously head-spinning weeks) who now call Libertino their creative home. These artists NEEDED to be heard by the rest of the world and I NEEDED to work with them. It was one of those rare moments you have in life where the artists, their music and their aesthetic all coalesced into one perfect form for the listener. It's these rare moments that I wish to capture and bottle for everyone listening to a Libertino artist, every release is special, a rare diamond in the dark. 
I strongly believe that art should be inclusive and not exclusive creating a community from grass roots level. Libertino's aim is to give artists a platform from which to fly and how to fly successfully. Come join us on this musical journey to the open horizon. Gruff Owen - Libertino'
