Dia De Muertos. A dry flinty wind blows tumbleweeds along the dusty street like a pack of lazy dogs. The hangman rides his thirsty horse into the border town of La Calavera, as deserted as a cemetary in the afternoon heat. Everyone knows of the notorious gang of gundoleros known as the Chopstick Posse, and his fee will be large. He walks across to the inn. The Sheriff’s relief is obvious as he hands the silver and a bottle of local mezcal to the hangman. He reaches inside his shirt and pulls a leather pouch off his neck, extracting a heavy antique key on a brass chain, and leaves it on the table. Glancing once more at the hangman, he takes back the tequila and leaves quickly. The hangman shrugs, signals for another bottle, and rolls a cigarillo from his pouch of green mexican..
Hours later, after the blood-red glow of the setting sun has faded from the sky, the hangman turns the key in the darkness and pushes open the rusty door. He holsters his pistol, and his cockney accent filters through the haze. “you alright?”. Another English voice replies from the corner “We’re just about outta spliff mate” , continued by an American - “but not outta bullets”. The room chuckles. Seven of Mexico’s most wanted gundoleros, one crowded stucco cell, and a haze of dank smoke. The metallic clacking sound of guns loading fills the darkening room, as the glowing cigarillos are
crushed out one by one. “Shall we wake the Sheriff?”
