The Project: Do something you’ve been putting off.

A long overdue experiment with processing vocals through a Red Panda Particle granular delay with pitch-shift.

Signal chain is: vocals through a Zoom H1n > Earthquaker Devices Avalanche Run, set on reverse delay + reverb > Red Panda Particle on pitch-shift setting. Everything performed live in the moment, with a bit of EQ to tame lows and brighten, and two edits after the fact for time and composition. For each section, I sang one sustained note and listened until I got a pitch-shift pattern that I liked, then I 'froze' it with the Chop control to create a loop, and improvised the other vocal parts over it in real-time.

Broken Glasses

Stab of Pain, the new album of Sig Valax, is now available at Snow in Water Records (release date: July 3rd 2020).

In Stab of Pain, Sig Valax presents synthetic landscapes open like dreams through which she invites us to travel. Interior spaces of endless resonance, drones piercing the blanket of the night like a beacon, sequences that force us to listen differently. The listener is caught up in a magical flow of multiple streams.
There is something very feminine - stiched or woven - in Sig Valax's music, and there are clearly correspondences with her work as a digital artist and her onirochromes which draw wave tables and three-dimensional spectra. Dream figures that escape our perception, threads that intersect and create a mesh where the pattern alters repetition, a spirituality that is both wise and adolescent and offers new paths mapped out through sound synthesis. These 8 inspiring and singular titles resonate with the universe of artists such as Sarah Davachi, Eliane Radigue, Delya Derbyshire and Laurie Spiegel.

This version was recorded with the Silbersee vocal ensemble (Jennifer van der Hart, Fanny Alofs, Łukasz Wilda, Maciej Straburzynski).

Raphael Vanoli is a rare guitarist, working on the different attack modes of the strings. His work related to breathing allows his sound creations to be recognized from the first notes. He makes visible a musical world, where he enlarges the microscopic rustling produced by the electric guitar. By working on amplification and sound spatialization, Raphael Vanoli produced a surprising first solo album, Bibrax, acclaimed by the specialized press. Here, in Venus by Day, he continues this collective work and invites us to a surprising encounter between drone music, free improvisation and baroque counterpoint.

This piece in homage to guitarist Rolf Oppermann, who died on April 29, 2020, has an architecture based on the main motif of the cantata "Mitten Wir im Leben sind" by Johann Sebastien Bach. This motif makes it possible to bring together the infinitely small and the infinitely large. Like a dust whose infinite grains gradually build a structure over a long period of time.

Venus by Day is a 120-minute work, which transforms the anxieties of a time into a dreamy summer evening.

Raphael Vanoli est un guitariste rare, travaillant sur les différents modes d'attaque des cordes. Son travail lié à la respiration permet à ses créations sonores d'êtres reconnues dès les premières notes. Il rend visible un monde musical, où il agrandit les microscopiques bruissements produits par la guitare électrique. En travaillant sur l'amplification et la spatialisation sonore, Raphael Vanoli a produit un premier album solo surprenant, Bibrax, plébiscité par la presse spécialisée. Ici, dans Venus by Day, il poursuit ce travail en collectif et nous invite à une rencontre surprenante entre la musique drone, l'improvisation libre et le contrepoint baroque.

The Assignment: Record the sound of ice in a glass and make something with it.

Ice cubes fall into a glass.
Recorded with a Tascam DR-100MKII + built-in mics Uni.
The Tascam is placed vertically on the glass, in contact.
A Pure data patch lets you hear the recording transposed to 3 voices  and brings out their harmonic components by spreading out them over time.
At the beginning we hear the untransposed sound.

Un patch Pure data fait entendre l'enregistrement transposé sur 3 voix et fait apparaitre ses composantes harmoniques en les déployant dans le temps.
On entends au début le son non transposé.
