A hefty WIP I created to commemorate my 16th birthday today.

It was a year ago that Response was created, and my life took a great turn where I wanted to. I may remake or delete this in the short term future to polish it even more, but who knows? Consider this Response 2 in work.

As always, thank you all for your support. Beat block has been horrible for me as well but I'm trying.

Sixteen Years

As the sun began its descent towards the horizon, casting warm hues of orange and pink across the sky, I slid behind the wheel of my Oldsmobile Cutlass—a classic treasure that had seen more than a few summers. The soft rumble of the engine warmed my heart, and as I shifted into drive, the world outside came alive with the sounds of the city.

Cruising down Lakeshore Drive, the air was electric with the scent of the nearby lake, mingling with the sweet echoes of music streaming from the radio. I rolled down the windows, feeling the cool breeze rush through the cabin, playful strands of hair dancing in the wind as I soaked in the moment. To my right, the shimmering Lake Michigan sparkled, its waves kissing the shoreline under the golden light of the late afternoon sun.

The cityscape loomed to my left, a kaleidoscope of skyscrapers and icons. The Willis Tower stood tall and proud, a familiar guardian watching over the bustling metropolis. There was something magical about this drive—the juxtaposition of the vast, open lake and the vibrant, invigorating energy of Chicago. I felt a sense of freedom, as if each mile erased the worries of the week.

As I navigated the curves, I decided to take a detour and pull off the drive, the call of the lakefront too tempting to resist. I parked the Cutlass along a path shaded by graceful trees, and as I stepped out, I was enveloped by the serene sounds of nature mixed with the distant laughter of others enjoying the evening.

Making my way to the water’s edge, I settled onto a weathered bench, the old wood creaking beneath me. I took a deep breath, inhaling the romantic scent of the lake, and letting my gaze drift to the horizon. 

The sun dipped lower in the sky, painting the clouds with vibrant strokes of purple, peach, and saffron. Each moment felt like a brushstroke on the canvas of the evening, a spectacle that reminded me of the beauty in life’s simplest pleasures.

As the sun continued its sink, glistening splashes of color danced on the surface of the water, and I couldn’t help but smile. A distant sailboat glided across the lake, its sails catching the last remnants of daylight. People strolled along the path, some hand-in-hand, others lost in their thoughts, all of us momentarily united by the breathtaking view.

Time seemed to slip away as I reveled in this tranquil escape. The Oldsmobile Cutlass—my trusted companion—sat just a few steps away, but for now, all I needed was this moment. The vibrant city, the gentle lapping of waves, and the spectacular sunset merged into a perfect tableau, illuminating the beauty of summer in Chicago.

As the day transformed into night and the first stars began to twinkle above, I stood, feeling rejuvenated. I walked back to my car, heart full, ready to continue the ride, knowing that sometimes the best journeys are the ones taken off the beaten path, where nature and the city collide in perfect harmony. With a final glance at the horizon, I climbed back into my Oldsmobile, embraced by the nostalgia of the open road and the promise of more adventures to come.
