We are thrilled to host perhaps our biggest DJ yet in South Africa's, DJ Okapi. When we set out to do this show, this is the exact type of DJ we were looking to feature, someone showcasing sounds you would be sure to not hear elsewhere - even for South Africans themselves, this is some heady music. Digging up rare vinyl grooves in the city of gold, DJ Okapi brings a forgotten era of South African pop music (back) to life. Recently headlining a Boiler Room show, amongst other things, this is definitely a DJ that deserves your attention, and more importantly the music he plays is a sound that deserves your attention.

After starting the mini Dekmantel Selectors podcast series last year, we couldn’t resist continuing it with artists from this year’s line-up. In the next couple of months, we will release 5 podcasts by some of our favourite artists. This year’s podcast theme is all about ‘another side of me’, wherein the artists show another side of theirselves.

Following up A Good Christian’s stunning podcast from two weeks ago is DJ Okapi (Dave Durbach). The South-African DJ and selector is known for running his Afrosynth-blog and playing fantastic collection of African flavored music all over the world. His performance at Dekmantel Selectors in August marks his debut on Dekmantel-grounds, so we are honoured to have an amazing warm-up with his contribution to our series.

With his Selectors Podcast for us, Dave shows another side of himself by playing none African tracks only. "These days I can get away with playing only South African music, but I used to be focused more on American music. Here’s a selection of tracks that complement the Afrosynth sound but are all from outside Africa, from remote and exotic corners of the world like the USA and UK, by artists like Aurra, Ashford & Simpson, Marcus Miller, Bernard Wright, Alphonse Mouzon, Rock Steady Crew and The Rose Brothers. Budapest born and based producer/keyboardist Szabolcs Bognar starts his new collaborative jazz project https://soundcloud.com/abasemusic with debut single "Skeme goes all city".
The base of the track is a smooth cinematic sounding riverbed of soothing harmonies where different instruments flow around in repetitive phrases. Every phrase repeats itself in the perfect length, as soon as you get your fix - a new melody kicks in.
"We wrote and recorded the track in one improvised studio session back in 2016. I brought the harmonic structure and the main melody and the band built on top of that. Everyone brought something to the table. It was recorded in the oldschool way, all the musicians in the same room, no headphones, no chance for correcting mistakes or editing. Raw. The title is a dedication to the New York graffiti pioneer Skeme and the power of self expression in Hip Hop culture." - Àbáse

I had been always thinking about what would happen if something went wrong at a psychedelic festival and the party was over - now I got the answer:

However, Panama authorities closed hundreds of people in quarantine, they didn’t serve nor food or drink to them.

It was the organisers of the festival who provided all of these even after the end of the official festival. Also, people started to become into volunteers to keep the site nice and clean as possible. 
People tried to stay positive, calm, they helped each other adopting to the given situation. 
Maybe this is the way how it should be done in the aggregate, too.

It has been obvious for long: we need to redefine our connection to the environment. But there are also several other things in which we can mature now. In this special situation everything is momentous and can have great effects. We are witnessing how the old world collapses and it can be painful. 
But it depends on us what will be the new world like.
