The perpetual pursuit of ever greater GDP, is merely a measure of the top few percents increasing wealth, that can only grow by forcing more and more people into debt?

As resources taken from the earth run short, the new realm of exploitation is the body, through medication and manipulation, people are being 'mined' like coal or minerals, for profit?

Land and property is being raised in value by speculators, as a speculative tool, to make it completely unaffordable to anyone other than the billionaire class, who desire to control it all?

Tax havens are being set up on the moon to avoid any form of tax on profits?

Crisp Packets will become the new currency, once the value of cash completely collapses?

Every generation throughout history has had to contend and resist exactly the same forces because power and wealth always make elites behave this way, no matter what principles they originally started with?

'To the fallen trees...' was a public and performative work at One Tree Hill, Tremont, Victoria, Australia performed on Sunday 9 October. The project was a creative response to the damaging effects of the windstorms on June 2021, which impacted the local Yarra Ranges environment and community. A series of letters of empathy were written and performed by local writers for our damaged trees to share our sorrow for the tree community. This was a collaborative project by Tammy Wong Hulbert, Marnie Badham, Ai Yamamoto & George Akl with writers Liz Millman, Lia Hills, Cameron Semmens, Richard and Katelin Farnsworth, Leslie Almberg, Julie Tipene O’Toole, Marian Spires and Emmet Wong Hulbert, developed for The Big Anxiety Festival 2022 with Yarra Ranges Council and RMIT Contemporary Art and Social Transformation. This soundtrack was composed by Ai Yamamoto. Image taken by George Akl.
