Summary:
When I drafted out this song, I wanted to create a song that could emotionally impact people and not to resort to using just four chords repeatedly in the song. I also wanted to move away from using a guitar in the song, so I expanded the idea with the ability to create various unique chords with the piano.

Differentiation Factors:
The piano arrangement doesn’t follow a linear “four chord” progression. It uses different chords to keep a steady flow of movement in the piece. This type of chord progression is rarely seen in popular contemporary music and would peak the interest of many listeners who are too used to songs that have the good old, “four-chords is all I need” mentality.

The length of the piece may be short, but it carries weight to the listener. I wanted them to understand its short message. This wasn’t meant to be a narrative that would force them to stay for a song, but to let them immediately grasp the message and scene, only to arrive at the conclusion wanting to know more, or to listen again.

Delivery:
Words - The lyrics are immediately recognisable and understandable. They convey the message right away to the listener, and are able find interest in a song that relates to them.

Melody - The melodic contour of the piece sung by the vocalists has a held back rhythm to it. It conveys the insecurity of the person, not being able to actually break the connection. The constant shifting down of the notes she sings also expresses the negative atmosphere the piece is trying to give out.

Arrangement - When I wrote this song, I wanted a solemn song that people could relate in times of hardship, especially ones who knows of abuse in relationships. To do so, I formed the song around the A minor key, a key that I personally feel can carry a lot of different “negative” emotions. The use of extensive chords and different voicing led to an instrumental that embodied a smooth, almost jazzy, piano backing track. This piano carries a sort of Christmas vibe and it would lead to some visualising winter. The cold air of the winter season can be warm for some, but bitter and piercing for others. 

Performances - The vocals supported by Raizel was crucial as the tone of her voice in this arrangement aided in conveying sadness and a sense of weakness to actually do as she says (“This is the where we must part”).

The rubato from the piano helped make the piece more emotional and free flowing, which expressed the idea of negative emotions. Its lack of consistency in tempo contributes to the unassertiveness of the person trying to break up, as the piano, in a way, holds back the vocals from staying to a solid tempo.

Recording Techniques: 
I planted an AT4081 atop of the hammers on the grand piano, hovering over the middle C note and an AT4021 to the center, pointing at the middle C. This helped me create an interesting stereo spread when I panned it, as both of them produced different tones from the piano, and also picked up varying frequencies of the piano strongly.

The room microphone, an AKG P420 set to cardioid pattern, was pointed towards inside the wall close to the piano, with its indentations. This captured a sense of reverb and was perfect to help create a good room sound for the mix.

Mix:
By adding reverb to the vocals and the piano, it created a spacious, almost ambient texture to the piece, which would help make the piece more solemn, befitting to the theme of the song.

Summary: 
When I was in Primary School, I’d often fantasise about adventures throughout time and space, thinking of myself as an adventuring boy, travelling across the galaxy with my trusty puppy-companion, Rusty (or Ruffles, I forgot).

I sought out to relive those reveries through the art of a synthetic, instrumental soundtrack. Using synthesisers to dictate my sci-fi daydreams was optimal and only a natural instinct. I wanted to bring out the “day” (technically no days in space) of a galactic, adventuring soul.

Differentiation Factor:
Instead of organic instruments to illustrate the journey of a boy travelling through space, I used synths and normal sounds, to express the sci-fi sensation of an extraordinary journey.

At the end, I used a simple space-rumble audio, an audio of snoring, and a melodious, spacious synth patch to illustrate the end of a hard-days’ travel.

Delivery Strategies:
It all revolves around the use of audio I dug up from Splice and Logic’s synthesising capabilities. Using the audio to depict the spaceship, the dog and the young boy, and the synth to illustrate the inorganic, unnatural world of my sci-fi fantasies.

Separating the track into four sections, the first being the start of the “day” where the audio files are used to set the scene. Second being the synthesisers telling the  first half of the day, third being the second half. The last tells of a tired young boy, falling into deep slumber with his puppy, awaiting for the next journey to come.
