With Moon Harbour boss Matthias Tanzmann’s latest and greatest album Momentum still making an impact on global dance floors, his label now looks to remix some key tracks from it. Getting the nod on the first of two such packages is returning favourite Andrea Oliva, plus new school stars Andhim and the legendary figures that are Josh Wink and Jesse Rose. 

Swiss tech house titan Andrea Oliva has been kicking out the jams on labels like Relief, Moon Harbour and Rejected for years. He opens things here with a turbocharged, bass-driven take on ‘Shake Shake’ that is mischievous and filled with ever more tension. When it finally gets released the 'floor is sure to explode as the drums kick once more. Ovum boss Josh Wink is a pillar of the global dance community who always comes correct, and he does so once again here with a heartwarming take on ‘Laika’ that marries incendiary hi hats with deep house drums and cosmic synth stabs. Running through it all are some classic acid sounds for that full on Wink effect.

By now Andhim are one of the most established modern tech house acts thanks to their inventive beats on labels like Get Physical. Their version of ‘Coffee Clouds’ is wonderful bleepy and melodic, with rain-like keys and globular synthesised sounds all layered over jumbled drums. It feels tribal and colourful, organic yet trippy. Last of all is the Jesse Rose, who for many years has been an ever-evolving producer, boss of Pay It Down and Made To Play, master of myriad club styles and king of the quirky groove. But, after one final album that is due soon, he will leave it all behind and head off into retirement. Before that, he comes correct on his wonky version of ‘Rybu’ with its low slung drums, curious vocals, neon chord stabs and playful and fun sense of groove all popping out of the speakers. 

All four cuts here really pack a punch and prove that Moon Harbour exactly have their finger on the pulse when it comes to fine remix talents.

‘Baby Sing A Song EP’ is Rogue D’s first solo release on DFTD, following recent collaborations with Memoryman (aka Uovo) and remixes for Eli Escobar on Classic Music Company. Formerly one half of hit-making duo and Defected favourite Flashmob, Danny Minchella is now Rogue D, the realisation of his influences from the electronic scene, from house to techno and from old school garage to deep house.

Plenty of these inspirations are evident in this EP, making for an intelligent and well-structured release that demonstrates Rogue’s live mixing technique. ‘Baby Sing A Song’ delivers pure pumping vivacity by means of a “say it like you mean it, girl” spoken sample, complete with baying crowd, and no-nonsense 4/4 beat. ‘Faith’, another live mix, develops the first track’s bassline into a deeper beat that rolls effortlessly, while ‘Surrender’ returns to the upfront house vibe that really makes this EP kick. Rogue D has truly reached his stride with this one; ‘Baby Sing A Song EP’ is what DFTD is all about.

Finally we find true romance with ‘Soulsista’. The sonic soulmate you never knew you needed, its deep dubby bassline slinks and purrs over jacking Chicago-style beats and cosmic weaves, bubbles and vapour trails wisp and whirr somewhere above you on cloud nine.

Parisian DJ and producer Kiddy Smile embodies the lifeblood of house music past and present. His music flashes with nostalgia for those mid-80s New York basements where house music first came alive. ‘Teardrops In The Box’ pulses with the intoxicating energy of a Ball in Kiddy’s native Paris, with its deep-rooted traditions but its intensely forward-focussing culture.
 
Following up on his fearsome debut ‘Let A B!tch Know’ on Defected, Kiddy Smile has deployed the well-established remixing capabilities of Mystic Bill, a house champion from the underground schools of Detroit and Chicago. His ‘Jersey Dub’ eases back on the tempo for a syncopated strut to The Garden State, while the ‘Vocal Mix’ is a bulkier prospect, emphasising Kiddy’s growling vocal with some serious attitude bass. Cowbell and raw synths give ‘Teardrops In The Box’ unadulterated dancefloor credentials but this is more than a club record; the layers to this track run deep.

'Wilderness Girl' marks Yotto's first Anjunadeep release of the year, equipped with a soaring melody that floats above an impossibly catchy bass line. The track is out on Anjunadeep on May 26th.
