Biography

Collaborations between musicians may not be a totally new idea, but when the heavy-weight skills of two of Europe’s premiere acts collide like this, you just have to take a step back and plug yourself in.

Made up of the incisive award-winning production skills of Noisia and the skilful swagger of UK rap crew Foreign Beggars, I AM LEGION’s much anticipated self-titled, 16 track debut album, unleashed through Division Recordings / Par Excellence and OWSLA, has confounded and met expectations in equal measure.

It’s a special bond between the two crews who have previous history. Noisia and Foreign Beggars first realised their joint potential after collaborating on the 2009 track ‘Contact’ that was released on the ‘United Colours of Beggatron’ album by Foreign Beggars’ label Dented Records. This tune blew up dance floors worldwide and set a precedent for where I Am Legion is today. Its 8.5 million plays on YouTube opened up a worldwide fan base wanting more, and leaving the artists realising that they can do it alone.

Working on further material post-Contact and its otherworldly cousin tunes ‘Shellshock and ‘Soul Purge’, both crews decided to fully release themselves from trying to format anything to fit in with industry norms.

I AM LEGION nods to rap’s erstwhile forays into electronica, absorbing elements of its present whilst laying out a reassuringly disturbed vision of what’s to come.

With a European tour under their belts, Stereosonic in Australia around the corner, and a US tour in the pipeline, the live show has quickly gathered momentum and will continue to do so through the 2014 festival season.

For the second hour we welcome Gilles Peterson in the slot for the 25th Anniversary of Solid Steel, a DJ who (along with Coldcut) also presented a show in the 90's on Kiss FM. For this mix he's layed down a 'Brit Funk 1977 - 1982' mix, returning to a period of music that was an important part of his life growing up. Music from independent labels, some run by record shops, like the first track by Cache on Groove Records. This is followed by the classic 'Trip to your mind' by Hudson People, a record that a 15 year old Gilles Peterson caught from them in the crowd at a Purley all-dayer. “Sprouted and Formed” is the inaugural album from enthralling electronic duo Rawtekk. Hailing from Hamburg in Germany, Rawtekk initially caught the attention of Med School with the sublime “Snowflakes” which features on the 2011 edition of the label’s popular “New Blood” compilation series.

Rawtekk will also be a familiar name to discerning fans of techy/neuro drum & bass, having released on labels such as Subtitles and Noisia’s Division Recordings. Past collaborations include tracks with fellow Hamburg resident and close friend Phace (Neosignal).

Fast forward to 2013 and Stefan and Christine return to Med School with their first ever full-length long-player which effortlessly combines precision engineering with elegant song-writing sensibilities.

Opener “A Magnanimous Kind’s Will” is a beautiful, dreamy utterance with a distinctive take on dubstep, whilst elsewhere we have eerie, melancholy tracks such as “Anywhere” juxtaposed with introspective drum & bass cuts like “Photone Recruits” and the spaced-out beatless melodies of “Ventricle”.

Keeping us on our toes, Rawtekk really up the ante with tough, gnarly drum & bass numbers “To Be A Space Monkey” and “Monopolists And Robberies” which dominate the second half of the album with their impressive force.

“Sprouted and Formed” is a captivating story told through a range of soundscapes and emotions… profound and haunting, surreal and cinematic, brutish yet sensitive, bringing together complexity and simplicity.
