OCTAVIA HILL(1838-1920)Social reformer, whose main concern was the welfare of the inhabitants of cities, especially London, in the second half of the C19th. One of the three founders of the National Trust. Blue plaque at Red Cross Garden, Southwark marks the place where Octavia established a garden, hall & cottages.
ADA SALTER(1866-1942)One of the first women councillors in London, first woman mayor in London & first Labour woman mayor in the UK. Ada is celebrated in her birthplace of Bermondsey, where a garden is named after her in Southwark Park, with a statue in tribute to her on the riverfront alongside her husband Alfred & daughter Joyce.
EVELYN SHARP (1869-1955) was a key figure in two major British women's suffrage societies, the militant Women's Social and Political Union & the United Suffragists. She helped found the latter & became editor of Votes for Women during the First World War. She helped to set up & run a social café, The United Suffragist’s Women’s Club, at 92 Borough Rd Southwark, for the wellbeing of local women in WW1. She wrote a book of vignettes of suffragettes, 'Rebel Women', which inspired this song.
UNA MARSON(1905-1965) Jamaican feminist, activist, poet, playwright and radio producer.
She became the first black woman to be employed by the BBC during World War II. In 1942 she became producer of the programme Calling the West Indies, turning it into Caribbean Voices, an important forum for Caribbean literary work. SARAH WHEELER(1964-2016)was a mental health rights activist who lived in Southwark. She founded The Mental Fight Club, a charity promoting creative activities for mental wellbeing. The MFC continues her work with two projects, The Dragon Café, a creative café for mental wellbeing, & RE:CREATE Psychiatry, which seeks to improve the rights of users of the mental health system. In In 2015 awarded the Honorary Liberty of the Old Metropolitan Borough of Southwark at the Southwark Civic Awards in recognition of her contribution to local life.
Vivien dedicates this song to the incredible staff team who  over the years have helped bring Sarah's vision, The Dragon Cafe, & this project, to fruition.

The vocalist is Vivien Ellis, and the fiddle player is Giles Lewin.
The ballad sheet pictured is contained in The Hailstone Ballad Collection at York Minster Library.
It was printed in Newcastle, tune: 'Flying Fame' (AKA 'Chevy Chase') Date not known.
The ballad tells the exemplary story (known as 'Roman charity') of a woman, Pero, who secretly breastfeeds her Father, after he is imprisoned and sentenced to death by starvation. It's of Roman origin, often represented in art, especially in the Baroque period.
There are artworks depicting this scene in British collections, including York, Derby, and the National Portrait Gallery.
In Prof Chris Marsh's 100 ballad project, he identifies 'A Worthy Example' as one of the 100 most popular ballads of the C17th century, based on sales. It was popular from the 1590's through to the eighteenth century.
There are 7 different copies of the ballad in the English Broadside Ballad Archive, all printed in London, the earliest dating from 1611.
A search of Bodleian Ballads Online yields 6 results for 'A Worthy Example', all printed in London, except one printed in Newcastle, part of the Douce Collection (Francis Douce 1757-1834, antiquarian, collector of ballads, Keeper of Manuscripts at the British Museum).

The Bodleian and Hailstone copies seem to be from the same Newcastle printer, and are similar, but not identical. This places the ballad in the North of England, and can contribute to scholarship and understanding of Northern/regional repertories.

This Yiddish wedding song features in The Spitalfields Ballad Walk, 11:00-13:00, Saturday July 1st 2023, for Museum of London Docklands, led by Vivien Ellis. The guided walking tour starts at 'Kindertransport - The Arrival', an outdoor bronze sculpture by Frank Meisler, in the forecourt of Liverpool St Station, and ends with a cuppa at Hanbury Hall co-working cafe (former Huguenot Chapel). Weaving through the streets of Spitalfields, Vivien will share songs and stories of Huguenot weavers, Jewish cloth merchants, and the communities who helped shape the City's first industrial suburb. This is a live recording of the Yiddish folksong 'Chatskele, Chatskele', from a performance of Jewish music by Vivien Ellis (voice), Giles Lewin (fiddle) and Ian Watson (accordion) at Christ Church, for the Spitalfields Festival. In 2002, Vivien was commissioned by the Spitalfields Festival and the Jewish Music Institute, supported by a Millennium Award, to research music of London's Jewish community, and to lead a community outreach project, giving young people and Jewish elders the opportunity to explore and celebrate music of Jewish heritage in London's East End through song and storytelling. 

In the song, a poor aunt asks a fiddler named Chatskele to play her a kazatskele (a wedding dance of Russian origin), even though she is poor and cannot pay for it.
