Fairly self explanatory! I actually finished this piece pretty much the same day that I laid all the groundwork for it, but I preserved the demo version nonetheless. The original idea here was just that I wanted to make a piece based around that arpeggiating ostinato. Something mysterious and atmospheric.
The full piece, Lost to the Ebony, was also later adapted into Sleep is for the Weak and used in my Selective Pressure EP.

Exactly what it sounds like! This took me a lot longer to develop than Lost to the Ebony, but right from the start the idea was to take the elements of that piece - the ostinato, the melody, the instruments, even the swishing sound effect at the end - and turn them into something daunting. Just like a boss theme in a video game would! It worked out pretty nicely.
The full piece now sits comfortably with Lost to the Ebony, in my single Blanket of the Dark.

Just the initial concept for Sandswept! In the final piece, these ideas were very well conserved and really just elaborated on.
Not much to say - I just love desert themes in video games, no matter how generic, and wanted to pull my own spin on it!

Lengthy side-note though:
I didn't pull on any specific cultural influences for this. I see a lot of "generic video game desert music" as a celebration of the biome itself as opposed to any specific culture. That's important to recognise - I don't think tropey desert areas always have obvious real-world influences, and that's a good thing and a bad thing.
I think it's much better than trying to include real-world inspiration and just appropriating bits of whatever cultures they want as if they're all the same thing, without really paying attention to what they're doing (I'm looking at you Aladdin!)
It's fairly harmless, but could also be a copout - a "safe option" to avoid having to do proper research and honour the culture being reflected.

Sandswept (Demo Version)

I wanted to compose a piece to round off my Selective Pressure EP, and whilst trying to think of what on Earth I could do in that regard, I came up with the slightly uninspired but equally genius idea of composing a piece using an instrument from each of the other 5 pieces! Originally I didn't intend to reuse the actual melodies too, but instead develop the concept outlined here. But I eventually gave in. The very concept for this was kinda tropey, so why not just lean in all the way?
The final track takes on the meaning that burnout can be a result of several different factors and stressors, all knitted together into a web that you can't untangle without just getting even more tangled. All these factors combine and drag you down with them, into a depressive state of guilt and hopelessness. At least, that's my experience. So it gives me comfort that my corny idea does serve a narrative purpose for the EP, giving it an appropriate conclusion. And, I have to say, the spooky gothic vibe works really nicely in my opinion.

This was one of the most fun compositional projects I've ever taken on - every time I made a little more progress I just wanted to hear the final version already! And when I finally finished, I was utterly delighted with how it turned out.
