This playlist comprises live improvised compositions played on the Soma Laboratory Rumble of Ancient Times (RoAT) synthesiser whilst sitting on the beach at the aptly named Paradise Cove hotel in Mauritius.  The tracks were passed through a 1010 Music nanobox yellow to add some effects and recorded into an Olympus digital recorder.  The tracks have been imported into Sound Forge for final mastering.

"Desert of Ice"  (WhiteNoiseProject 4d)

Well this is an experiment in making a track where the sole source of all sound heard is white noise.  The white noise is filtered to create HP, BP and LP outputs and these are further processed by a pitch "shiftor" and granular processor supported by various trigger, LFO and envelope modulation sources, VCAs and delay/reverb effects to create the palette of sounds you hear in the track.

Oh and the cover, the original challenge was to use only white noise and a cardboard tube.  Well I have used the cardboard tube as the track cover!

This is one of a series of experiments with the TipTop Buchla modules.  In addition to the Buchla modules a wave folder, two sequential switches, a logic module and an effects unit are used.  One of the five sound sources, a hi hat is constant the other four sounds are selected by the coin toss and sequential switch such that none or any number of them can be playing at any one time.

When I bought my first eurorack modules, I was warned that I was at risk of going down a rabbit hole.  At that time, I did not understand what this meant but I certainly do now!

So when you think of a rabbit hole you almost certainly are reminded of Lewis Carroll's story Alice's Adventures in Wonderland. And that is the inspiration for this track, a story based on Alan's Adventures in Modularland.  I wrote the story and recorded it as a sample that plays whilst I improvise with various eurorack modules over the top to create an electronic soundscape.

The modules used include logic and random probability as a tribute to Carroll's mathematical interest.  Central to the control of the track is After Later Audio's version of the Turing Machine aptly named Alan.

The pathogen of COVID-19 continues to impact the world, as the pandemic wreaks havoc and spreads arounds the world. As time goes on, mutations of the virus emerge, which can affect how infectious and how lethal the virus is.

And, there are also different forms of coronavirus diseases – like SARS, MERS, and now COVID-19 – all caused by viruses in the same “family”.

What is the reason why MERS is so much deadlier, but less infectious, than COVID-19, which transmits easily but has a lower lethality rate than MERS or SARS? Can we better understand how the molecular details of the viruses work, and if they may provide clues for treatments or cures? 

It's in the music! In a paper published in Cell Matter, we have identified a strong direct relationship between the nature, rate and intensity of the virus spike protein vibrations and how readily the virus could penetrate the human cell, as well as an opposite relationship with the fatality rate of a given coronavirus. 

The key result of our work is that both, the overall flexibility of the upward receptor-binding domain and the mobility ratio of the receptor-binding domain in different conformations, represent two significant factors that show a positive scaling with virus lethality.
