This one, you guessed it, is all about Dominican Mambo. It is not the one you hear nowadays tho, this focuses on the early version of mid '00. Before the Dembow and DR Rap hypes, this was it and it pretty much redefined Merengue in the process.

From big budget, clean-cut Merengue of the ‘80s and ‘90s, the millennium saw it incorporating simpler midi-based sounds. It then went into looped Merengue samples with x-rated lyrics, until it became Mambo. Now fully produced within a DAW, the lyrics were either hilarious or way over the top (similar to Baile Funk).

Armed with an FL Studio crack, stock sounds, and malware-ridden Reggeton librerias, you were good to go. Yes, you probably had to reinstall Windows XP again, but who cares.

Completely out of tune, with most tracks sounding like it only had Sausage Fattener on the master, they seemed like fast sketches to later be fixed with a live band if it took off. This new entry-level meant that pretty much everyone with a DAW had a shot to make a hit.

Established Merengue artists looked at it in disregard, where it downgraded Merengue in their eyes, but it didn’t take long before they hopped on the bandwagon. As soon as it came into fashion it already went away, unfortunately, but in those short years that it dominated, it left a pretty big impact on me.

In 2010 I gathered all my favorites for the I Love Mambo mixtape on Dave Quam’s 'It’s After The End Of The World' blog. Fast-forward to a couple of years ago when I met Nihiloxica who linked me with Nyege Nyege and here we are - it is actually out there!

True to form, the songs try to keep the essence of what made me love the genre in the first place. Out-of-tune melodies, raw sounds, and fast Merengue rhythms.
