They negotiate with gravity

descend like hesitant monks
in dissolving robes
geometry forgetting its edges
Like the moment a heart slips

Some drift upward

I've done that too
falling without touching

Under the streetlamp
they turn to brief insects of light
cold, transparent
bright without reason
free for exactly one second
A second is enough

or fall out
or fall through yourself

I stand
They continue
They keep their hundred names
and give none away
Snow remembers nothing
perhaps that's why
it looks so alive
as it falls
