Bäck fCHom ze deäd, as they say, hopefully with more frequent fideos again. This song is among my absolute favourites. I love both the original and the remade version. The entire (H)G(S)S soundtrack is a masterpiece, of course. Last winter when I was looking through my playlists to find good winter-themed songs to cover, I of course put this one on the list™. But I didn’t feel ready yet, I wanted to wait at least another year to make sure I’ll do the song justice, both because of how much I love it and because the original is already 8-bit and I wanted to make sure it didn’t sound too similar to the original. It might be a little late for a winter-themed cover due to unfortunate circumstances, but it’s winter somewhere in the world and I’ve been looking forward to covering this so much for so long. I’ve learnt a lot since the beginning of my 8-bit journey, and I believed I might be ready for this song now.

This is probably the most nostalgic and favourite song in the entire DPPt soundtrack for me. Whenever I think of Sinnoh music, this one comes to my mind first. Along with the memories of the very beginning of my Pokémon journey. Time for yet another dedicated dedication: This cover is dedicated to Amarizo, who hates the Romans, I mean loves Sinnoh as much as I do, to the unknown person who my Pearl cartridge originally belonged to and to my grade 5 class mate who found this cartridge and gave it to me because Pokémon was cool at school at the time and I was among the only ones to never have played or watched Pokémon due to my mum being a staunch opponent of fideo games and especially violent video games like Pokémon. I still feel gillcup for deleting that person’s save file. I guess I’ll never know if I destroyed 10k hours of competitive breeding, a collection of rare event Pokémon and a living dex or if it was “just” some kid’s beloved casual save, which would of course have the same value to them. If you happen to live in northern Germany and have lost a Pearl cartridge about 12 years ago, let me know. But rest assured that I gave it a good home.

According to my list™, the DPPt lake legends battle theme should have come next. But because I’m busy with a lot of stuff irl right now I haven’t felt like doing a cover. But I didn’t want to do nothing for yet another month, and when I was listening to music, this song started playing and I immediately felt the desire to cover it. It sounds incredible and is nostalgic, but also very simple, so I could cover it quickly to at least do something and to have some fun without having to focus on a very complex piece. And it was definitely worth the weight, as I did have fun and love the result.

Now for the obligatory dedicated dedication which has become a tradition by now. This cover is, unsurprisingly, dedicated to pannenkoek2012. His videos, skills and knowledge are impressive, fascinating, educational and entertaining. I really recommend checking him out, even if you don’t care about SM64. You’ll learn a lot about the innards of video games.

Azelf was the first legendary Pokémon I’ve ever caught. And it was a loose second member of my first ever “team”. That consisted of just an Infernape with four fire attacks. So having an Azelf to occasionally use Extrasensory in the late parts of the game was useful. Good times. I like how Azelf looks. I like it the most out of the three Lake Guardians, probably mostly because it was my first and the only one of them that I’ve ever used and because it’s blue. Uxie is yellow, though, but very pale. Maybe it’s also Azelf’s head shape that reminds me a little of Link’s hat, I like its head the most as well. The trio of course also reminds me of the Golden Goddesses and the Triforce from Zelda (see TLoK), only that Mesprit represents emotion instead of power, which I like because now they all represent values that are important to me. And Azelf represents courage, just like Link’s Triforce piece. Though I’m not sure about my personal relationship with courage. It’s a somewhat ambiguous one. To quote Jeremy the Wise: “U-Uxie!”

Even though for me there was a time before you came to exist, I can’t imagine life without you. I’m so happy that we can share and validate our experiences, help each other and understand each other. Interestingly and fittingly enough, I recently had a dream where I was told that someone murdered you and I collapsed to the ground and cried, similarly to how the partner reacted to the protagonist’s death/disappearance. And while we are fortunately both alive and digitally and mentally close to each other, I did physically disappear and leave you behind when I moved out. Which I feel very guilty about. This song is one of my favourites from Johto (I feel like I say that in every description), it’s so calm and beautiful, yet lively, just like some Quiet Village with all sorts of life forms scuttling about in the lush grass gently moved by a warm breeze between log cabins and trees of the nearby forest. I remember how horrible I found that Team Rocket Slowpoke Tail amputation business as a child and that I was curious if it was actually possible to buy a severed tail if one had the like million Pokédollars they cost. Of course there’s also Kurt’s Apricorn workshop. I loved Apricorns, they were something different, they were colourful with a wisible picking animation and they introduced many new Pokéballs that were both useful but above all had more designs and colours. I always tried to pick balls that fit the Pokémon to inhabit it, it was unfortunate that they were mostly unobtainable in non-Johto games. Though the one thing that came to my mind first when thinking about Azalea Town for some reason is coming out of the Union Cave to the east and walking along that tiny route. Something about this place fascinates me, I have no idea why, there’s nothing there, except that it always rains which I had forgotten until I read about it on Bulbapedia. That place also makes me remember something about a Geodude in my team that, I believe, became a Golem somewhere around Victory Road. I don’t remember anything else about that team member. Another thing I’ve read during my Bulbapedia research for this fideo is that they apparently disposed of the GS Ball in the anime and never mentioned it again in hopes that the average viewer would forget it.

This is the first actual song cover I’ve created using FamiTracker and I’m surprisingly pretty happy with how it turned out. For the main voice I used the triangle channel because it sounds kind of like a flute at high octaves, the downside is that it doesn’t allow many modifications or decorations except for vibrati which is why I considered using the FDS expansion with a triangle wave at first. In order to simulate the sound of the supporting voice, I used a volume envelope that starts loud, becomes quieter quickly and then slowly fades along with a bit of a tremolo. This creates an interesting sound with an initial attack that lingers a bit afterwards, just like in the original. Both pulse channels play the supporting voice alternately to make the most out of the lingering sounds and to prevent the overlapping lingering of the last two notes from causing a dissonance I added a faster fade as release in the volume envelope that is used on the second to last note of longer notes. (I wrote this paragraph a year ago when I made the song)

Also, the beginnings and ends of (solo) triangle wave sounds at high octaves don’t sound that great but there was no way around that.

In regard of the integration of the drawings into the fideo, this was my first time drawing hair. For the first time it turned out acceptably I think, partly thanks to Amarizo’s helpful suggestions.

[8-Bit] Twilight Princess – Ilias Theme

I briefly started working on this 5 months ago and I wanted to get it done before season 8 ends. But of course things went differently.

This is my first attempt at percussion in FamiTracker. I used both the triangle and noise channel with volume slides, pitch slides and arpeggio envelopes. At first I thought the triangle drums sounded a bit weird but when there are other sounds playing at the same time it sounds alright.

There are multiple reasons why it took 4 weeks to get this fideo done. Some were out of my control like real life stuff and the troubles I had trying to make the animation. Clip Studio Paint is amazing and can do a lot of the things I always dreamt of but quite a few of them don’t always work, at least the way I need them. For a pixel art animation I of course needed nearest neighbour interpolation which is amazingly possible in a canvas setting. Unfortunately, this applies only to moving raster images, not to file objects inside an animation folder (but outside of animation folders it does?!) and not to camera movements. I love file objects, the ability to add a seperate file as layer is amazing and what I always wanted and so I use them whenever possible in animations. It took a long time to figure all these strange things out and to make it work the way I wanted it to. Adding every single one of the many 60 fps-frames that I animated and exported in Aseprite to their respective frames in Clip Studio Paint was annoying and time consuming as well. Actually, at first I wanted to animate the camera movements in Video deluxe since it has good position keyframing but of course no way to change the scaling interpolation. After the finished animation was exported in Clip Studio Paint, I had to resize every one of the 5900 frames to 3840p in Aseprite. I tried it multiple times but every time Aseprite (and other programmes) crashed because it ran out of memory. So I had to import the images into multiple Aseprite files and export them separately. The resizing alone took 4 hours. But I’m still incredibly glad that I can now use Aseprite to do this.

The biggest reason in my control were my usual self-doubts. A lot of the time I wasn’t motivated to continue because I thought the song and the animation will be terrible. Some times I actually liked my progress and had fun but in the next moment I changed my mind again. I’m not sure if this is good or good enough but I tried to convince myself that it might be terrible now but I need to continue if I want to improve. At the beginning of the year, I had the idea to make an 8-bit version of this song and I was really excited to recreate the high ticking noise and everything else. But I put it on my fideo list to make it for Halloween, hoping that by then I would have a lot of FamiTracker experience and would be able to do the song justice.

Now I’d say I’ve just had enough experience to make it good enough. The base drum actually sounds like one unlike the terrible attempt I made in the GoT theme. Apparently 3 Triangle wave ticks are enough. During the creation process and when I was done I actually liked and was satisfied with how it sounded. In fact, I liked it so much that I listened to it for hours while drawing the pixel art. Maybe that’s why I’m not sure if it’s good anymore now as I usually don’t like a song anymore when I’ve listened to it too many times consecutively. I just couldn’t resist because I was so surprised that I actually for the first time made an 8-bit cover that I liked. Now however, I think it just sounds good because the song is so simple that it’s impossible to make a bad sounding cover. The only thing I’m still satisfied with is the percussion.

I’ve actually not watched the film before, I just knew the great music from Dead by Daylight but to get something for the visuals of the fideo, I watched it. I expected a scene of Laurie looking ouf of a window and seeing Michael Myers outside in the dark that I could recreate in a top-down video game style but I only found one potential scene: Michael Myers standing menacingly on top of the stairs, only his silhouette being visible in the dark and Laurie or rather the camera looking up to him. While I could barely see anything during that actual scene, in my head I had all kinds of ideas how a scene like this could look amazing. Myers, or as a Zelda reference the Skull Kid with Majora’s Mask and Myers’s’s knife, could be standing up there, his dark silhouette in front of a window that gives a bit of light to the top floor and lets us see the beautiful stars, but also Majora’s Mask’s eerie moon, the main focus lying on the mask’s glowing eyes. Of course, the Skull Kid has to be accompanied by Tael.

Very creative team name, I know. Back then, I couldn’t think of a better name and wanted to continue playing. PMD2 Sky is one of my most favourite games and so is the soundtrack. I’m very thankful that I was given the opportunity to experience this wonderful game as a child and to this day I get very emotional when I listen to the soundtrack or even see scenes of the game. That’s quite useful actually, whenever I have something in my eye I can just listen to some especially emotional or sad songs and it will be removed in no time.

The game has so many great songs that I couldn’t decide which one to cover first, so I just took the first song to begin the PMD 2 covers and to get some more practice before I do the best songs. At first, I finished the cover only using the 2A03 channels. I put up that initial version for download as well. However, I didn’t like the sound of the noise-only base drums at all but the triangle channel was entirely used up by the bass and juggling base and drums in the same loud triangle channel doesn’t sound good either. I also had the idea to use additional channels to attempt to create an echo, so I added the VRC6 channels, moved the base to the sawtooth channel, added triangle sounds to the base drums and had two more pulse channels to use for the echo or other things. I wasn’t sure if using the sawtooth channel as base is a good idea though as it doesn’t sound as good and the loud triangle base is certainly a very distinct feature of 2A03 music. Because I used an odd number of lines per beat, I had to add Gxx in every single line of the first echo channel to make it start half a beat later. Using more than 1 effect column with 7 channels however wouldn’t fit my video layout and I didn’t want to half the resolution just for a couple of pixels, so I edited the second effect column of VRC6’s Pulse 1 channel out. Just pretend the echo notes in that channel all have G04 behind them.

A year ago, I tried to draw a BotW landscape to use as my outro. It was supposed to have signs next to a pathwaytrailroutetrack with previous videos and everything. Finally I covered this song, it’s one of my favourites from the game. Two months ago, when I first mentioned wanting to cover Aegis Cave, I said that I apparently haven’t been there yet in the games as I didn’t remember the Regis and Unowns and just know the song because I’ve listened to the soundtrack a lot. When I was sick in December, I dusted off my game, saw the Regigigas symbol on the save file and found Unown stones in the Kangaskhan Storage and immediately remembered. And apparently only a couple of different Unowns can spawn on each floor and you can check which ones exactly in the menu. Knowing that definitely would have made things easier.

After Canalave City, I finally started learning HTML and CSS. Though I didn’t get that far, I dont’t know why. I guess partly because I had to waste a lot of time to research, think about and do something for the two baby tortoises my mum apparently spontaneously bought but that’s a different story. My plan was to spend one week learning web development stuff and the next week making the next fideo. I was listening to music when I was learning and Dragonspiral Tower started playing. Why not cover that next, I thought, it sounds great and rather simple. Then again, I felt guilty for choosing a song that is simpler and shorter. After all, everything I do has to be better than last time.

Beach Cave. The very first dungeon. The beginning of an incredible journey. This song makes me especially nostalgic. It reminds me of the first hours spent in a dungeon. Back when the game was new and magical and I explored every floor completely instead of trying to get to the stairs as quickly as possible before I die, starve or run out of PP. And this song, partly because of the nostalgic factor, is one of my favourites from the game.

Animal Crossing: Wild World, along with Dr. Kawashima's Brain Training, was my first game for my first console, a white DS lite. I played it a lot and have many good memories of it. I remember playing it in bed sometimes and falling asleep while doing so, waking up the next day not only to an empty DS with all progress lost, but to be greeted by Resetti as well. The museum was my favourite place and I loved gathering exhibits. Fossils were the most interesting to me, followed by fish. Insects were alright but I didn’t care about the paintings. These old paintings, that are indeed quite impressive from a technical view, were the only topic in art class at school, so until a couple of years ago I thought I hated art and found it boring. But then, thanks to the interwebs, I realised that there are many other forms of drawing arts and I do actually like some of them a lot. If only I had realised that earlier. The museum’s music is very great and nostalgic as well, my favourite versions are fossils and paintings. Blathers was one of my favourite characters, I always enjoyed talking to him and related to his sleep cycle and sleepiness. The observatory was amazing as well, I was really sad that they removed it in New Leaf. Also, I always thought it would be great to have a flora museum to collect all flowers, trees etc. in one place. The insect area is a little like that, but I would like a proper one. For New Horizons, I wish that they bring back the observatory and add a flora section.

Finally it’s done. I thought I could just quickly cover this simple song and draw some slutty anime shit and get it out on April 1st as well, but here we are, more than two months later. Hopefully, it has been worth the weight. As you might have noticed, I’m the Link-Riolu of the Past. But if you followed me on Twitter or Discord (or read my description novels and paid attention to easter eggs in fideos), you already know that I changed my name. Back when DbD was still very new, I found it through the German let’s player Gronkh. It’s incredible to think about how differently I viewed the game when I was new to it. When it actually seemed scary, I had no idea what would happen and the map seemed like a large thick forest with danger lurking behind every tree. I actually got that feeling back a little one time, when they added Michael Myers. I hadn’t played the game in a long time and suddenly spotting his pale face in the distance stalking me was actually scary for the first couple of games and I loved it. But I’m glad that the game isn’t too scary and the violence and graphics don’t look too realistic. Although it would be nice if they updated some animations, especially the older moris.

I actually don’t remember much from The Famous Five. I just have a couple of scenes still in my head, some from the series and some from the books. I remember that I liked George for being George, Anne for being careful, anxious and compassionate and Dick for being an unimportant secondary character and I remember that I loved the architecture in the series. I read the books first and one thing that I had to get used to when I watched the series is that Richard was exclusively called Richard in the German books but exclusively Dick in the German dub of the series. And now, remembering this lead me to finally look up why Dick is the nickname for Richard. Apparently, changing letters in existing nicknames to make rhymes and crimes, as Fresh D would say, used to be something the cool kids would do, as Fresh D would say. This applies to many nicknames that are still in use today. Richard → Rick → Dick, Robert → Rob → Bob. Andrews. Which is coincidentally and interestingly also the name of this song’s composer, in addition to being the name of one of The Three Investigators, whose leader’s German voice actor is the same as Julian’s. But he voice acts many things. It feels like there are only like 10 German voice actors that do everything, so watching German dubs never gives you unique voices that you can associate to new characters and that convey new personalities in a new way. One of the best and most memorable things from the series is the music. This song is good and iconic but the melodies and songs that play during the episodes are really amazing. I have to cover those as well one day.
