Barker DJ set @ Kyo, Singapore - 31.10.15

Being a long time resident DJ somewhere teaches you the sort of skills that stand you out from the pack. Cologne’s Lena Willikens is one such special selector who has very much made Salon Des Amateurs in Dusseldorf her own. As well as serving up singular sets there, she is also a key part of the Comeme Records crew with the likes of Barnt. For them she hosts a regular radio show, and for them she has released her brooding, industrially bleak techno sounds. 

Lena’s influences come from well outside the normal cannon - proto techno, industrial boogie, synthesised disco, outlier house and robot jack all characterise her work, and the set she has served up here. It is one hour of unusual grooves, unsettling atmospheres and metallic textures that are abstract and dehumanised and take you to a raw and visceral place that is hugely intoxicating. Easily one of the best mixes this year so far in our humble opinion!

Six years ago, Russian-born Marina Rubinstein was a raver living in Tel Aviv with dreams of becoming a DJ. After saving up enough money, she bought a one-way ticket to Berlin, where she quickly worked her way up from playing small rooms to 20 people to playing the world's biggest techno club, Berghain.

Dr. Rubinstein's story is a familiar one, but her love of '90s acid techno and life-affirming rave tunes helped the fledgling DJ to stand out in a city then dominated by darker, more hypnotic sounds. Today, she's a globally respected selector with a joyous, life-affirming style.

This week's FACT mix is a snapshot of Dr. Rubinstein's dreamier side, packed with hazy breakbeat, electro and acid; it rarely climbs above 115BPM, with tracks from Lake Haze, Holger Flinsch and Legowelt amongst the tracks that will have spotters taking notes. It's one for the 7am crew.

American born Lily Ackerman is a producer and DJ based in Berlin.

Raised in a quiet farming town in Illinois, Lily’s first outings with electronic music began after relocating to the San Francisco Bay Area, co-founding the Diacritic Collective - a group of music devotees passionate about vinyl culture - and later landing a residency at the long-running As You Like It parties. In 2019, she moved to Berlin where she has unleashed her dexterous selection of techno, electro and leftfield electronics at institutions like Tresor, Berghain, Renate, Watergate and Else.

Her production career spans over a decade, with her first wave of material surfacing on Mioli Music in 2013 (‘Africa’), to releases on Perfect Location Records, Vinyl Dreams Records and As You Like It Recordings and contributions to compilations by HÖR Berlin, Bewegungsfreiheit and Perimeter Junk, tracking a gradual and effortless stylistic shift towards the more angular and experimental side of the electronic cosmos.

Channeling her US roots and fusing years of experience with newfound inspirations in Berlin, Lily Ackerman looks toward the future with hope, passion and an innate sense for the eternal groove of the dance-floor.
