Past, present, and future swirl together in a fantasy of a 1960’s movie soundtrack with yearning for past summer days, mixed with futuristic, dreamy ripples of electronic sound. This is Lomboy’s new single, “In the Chamber of Vanu,” taking listeners back in time while creating a hint of futuristic drama.  Echoing tympani-like percussion (actual drum samples taken from old recordings) and strings that sound liberated from a ‘60s movie orchestra combine with surfer-style guitars.  Tanja Frinta’s gentle voice has drifted to Lomboy (named for the Philippine fruit) from dream pop trio Lonely Drifter Karen, her other current musical project, fulfilling  her dream of creating something completely her own. “In the Chamber of Vanu” and Lomboy’s other forthcoming songs all share the 60’s film atmosphere as well as noticeable influences from 60’s Asian pop such as Singapore’s The Stylers, and Shadow Music from Thailand, whose “lush guitar lines, dreamy organs, and exotic beats,” have captivated Frinta just as Lomboy’s sounds captivate us.

One listen to Constellation, Indonesian indie folk pop duo Stars and Rabbit’s debut studio album, will never be enough. These 11 solidly-produced tracks from guitarist Adi Widodo and singer Elda Suryani are enigmatic, charming, childlike, imaginative, unforgettable and more. The two old friends first joined forces in 2011, their combined musical influences including primarily British and Icelandic artists known for pushing creative limits and pioneering sound art: Sigur Rós, Coldplay, Radiohead, Emiliana Torrini, Imogen Heap, and Sia to name a few.

The result of these influences are clear in Constellation where the songs’ textures, emotions and dynamics grow and develop, sometimes starting with childlike charm, then building to a roaring intensity. Ranging from haunting acoustic Appalachian style, to heavy, driving blues rock, the songs incorporate mystical slide guitars and strings, delicate chimes, dark cellos and heavy bass. Suryani’s childlike voice floats over top with a distinctive edge reminiscent of Björk: there are no limits on what she chooses to do, stretching syllables, vocalizing wordlessly, floating melody lines in the pure enjoyment of singing. This full album, releasing digitally May 15, 2015 , is the next brilliant step for Stars and Rabbit after the 2013 release of their first EP, Live at Deus.

For years, fans of Orange & Lemons have been clamoring for a re-issue of the band’s first album, Love in the Land of Rubber Shoes & Dirty Ice Cream (originally released in 2003). Now that O&L has reformed (2017) as a threesome of Clem Castro (vocals/guitar), JM del Mundo (bass/backing vocals), and Ace del Mundo (drums/backing vocals), they are definitely back with a self-produced, complete re-recording of the album — plus a couple of bonus tracks! 

Fifteen years ago, this landmark release paved the way for the band’s commercial success and catapulted them into poster boys of Philippine indie music, with their British-inspired songwriting style and pop sensibilities indebted to the likes of The Beatles, The Smiths and other ‘60s and ‘80s pop music.

My Life's Arithmetic Means - The Camerawalls

Despite their deceptively laissez-faire attitude towards gigging, the band has been quietly making music, sight unseen. And if you listen very closely, you sense a new confidence in the way they deliver their twee-fied version of indie pop. Released as a tribute to the late Keith Girdler, vocalist of Blueboy, who passed away in 2007 due to cancer. Blueboy, which formed in 1989, was but one of Girdler’s projects; the original “Sea Horses” is from Blueboy’s 1992 album, If Wishes Were Horses. It’s a beach tune, another spotless afternoon kind of tune, the kind of song you want playing when you’re off to an adventure with your mates, cares be damned. The Gentle Isolation has made their cover version even more joyous than the original – quite fitting, given that Girdler’s friends have noted how he had wanted to be remembered with “happiness and smiles.”
