Lincoln was one of the last big areas to be brought into the railway network, and it was largely the work of George Hudson, a speculator but a man with the vision of seeing a national network of railways, who convinced the Midland Railway Company to build a line from Nottingham to Lincoln. Now there were very mixed views, as lots of people in Lincoln wanted the line through the city to run from York to London - in fact a meeting of 6,000 people in the Cattle Market ended in free fight. The Midland line won out though, and when a second line was planned in 1846, the Town Clerk was sent to London to ask why these two lines could not converge on one level crossing as opposed to two.
