"Hay muchas historias sobre cómo Wesley se inspiró para escribir este himno, pero ninguna ha sido completamente comprobada. Algunas de ellas son las siguientes. Al regresar a Inglaterra en el otoño de 1763, después de un tiempo decepcionante en Estados Unidos, el barco de Charles Wesley fue atrapado en una tormenta y parecía que todo estaría perdido, pero el 3 de diciembre llegaron a tierra. Wesley escribió en su diario ese día: “Me arrodillé y bendije la Mano que me había conducido a través de laberintos inextricables.” Algunos escritores dicen que durante la tormenta un pájaro voló a la cabina de Wesley y se escondió en su pecho buscando consuelo y seguridad. Otro dice que Wesley escribió este texto mientras yacía bajo un seto, después de haber sido golpeado por una multitud enojada que se oponía a su ministerio. Otros más ven el texto como un reflejo de la propia vida de Wesley cuando era joven, mientras luchaba por encontrar su paz con Dios antes de su dramática conversión el 21 de mayo de 1738.
