We never saw the moment the sky broke.
Perhaps it had been breaking for centuries,
crumbling silently above our heads,
until the first fragments began to fall.

At first, the ash seemed harmless.
It drifted slowly, like snow without warmth,
a soft shroud over the ruins we called home.
We told ourselves it was only dust,
that it would pass,
that it could not bury what was already forgotten.

But the ash did not cease.
It thickened, layer upon layer,
suffocating voices, erasing paths,
sealing memories beneath a weight too heavy to unearth.

Now we walk in a world without horizon,
where day and night are the same shade of grey.
Every breath tastes of what once burned,
and every silence echoes with what was lost.

Ashfall is not an ending.
It is the inheritance of a fire long gone,
the residue of choices we never dared to make.

And when the last ember dissolves into dust,
when even our shadows are covered and unnamed
who will rise from the ash to say we were ever here?
