Soundway and Tummy Touch are proud to present three blistering albums of Afro rock and funk from Nigerian multi-instrumentalist Joni Haastrup and his band MonoMono. Re-issued for release on CD, download and replica gatefold LP are three of Nigeria’s most coveted releases; MonoMono’s 1971 debut album ‘Give The Beggar A Chance’, the follow up ‘Dawn of Awareness’ and Joni Haastrup’s debut solo record ‘Wake Up Your Mind’. 

Soundway have been championing Joni Haastrup since day one featuring tracks on both the ‘Nigeria Special!’ and ‘Nigeria Rock Special!’ releases. Most recently Joni appears as a guest keys players on Black Goddess, an Afro-jazz soundtrack collaboration with Remi Kabaka.

Growing up in a royal household in Nigeria, Joni Haastrup began his musical journey performing for his brothers band Sneakers and was quickly snapped up as a vocalist for O.J. Ekemode and his Modern Aces’ ‘Super Afro Soul’ LP, one of Afro-beat’s formative LPs. Soon after, Ginger Baker of Cream fame replaced Steve Winwood with Joni on keys for Airforce’s UK concerts in ‘71 and the success of the collaboration led to further shows with Baker as part of the SALT project before he returned to Nigeria to set up MonoMono.

The Blueprints EP marks the welcome return of the talented Toulouse based producer Redeyes. Following a number of releases on seminal labels such as Bingo, Creative Source, Innerground and Brownswood in the mid 2000s, Redeyes then decided to take a step back from music production. Now returning as a more complete and mature artist, his Blueprints EP on Lenzman’s The North Quarter imprint sends an exciting message of where Julien Salvi stands in 2017.

Comprising of an ambitious nine tracks, Redeyes’ Blueprints EP showcases his exquisite musicianship and ability in the studio throughout each piece of music. Stolen Moments: Red Hot + Cool was hailed as Time Magazine’s 1994 Album of the Year. One of the first projects to explore the impact of AIDS upon the African American community, Stolen Moments features collaborations between old school jazz performers and contemporary hip hop artists

In addition to the album release, a one hour music television special will air on public television stations across the United States presented by the Independent Television Service (ITVS) with funds provided by the Corporation for Public Broadcasting. The Stolen Moments: Red Hot + Cool special is a dynamic concert event filled with electric on-stage collaborations and candid discussion. The ITVS broadcast marks the first of the Red Hot Organization's five music projects to be aired on public television. In addition to footage of the live performances, interviews with Professor Cornel West and actor Giancarlo Esposito, and people who are infected with HIV, talking about their experiences and concerns.. It creates a space for frank and necessary discussion about HIV/AIDS."

Produced by The Red Hot Organization for the Independent Television Service (ITVS), Stolen Moments: Red Hot + Cool is the fifth in a series of AIDS benefit musical projects, and the first to air on public television. A fresh and innovative concert special, Stolen Moments melds the classic genre of jazz with today's hip hop featuring the best artists from both worlds together for the first time. But Stolen Moments is more than just a landmark centerstage music event. It's a compelling video montage of what's happening in communities of color around the difficult issues brought on by the stunning rise in AIDS cases in recent years. At a time when media interest in AIDS has ebbed, Stolen Moments: Red Hot + Cool is bound to refuel the debate

The Stolen Moments: Red Hot + Cool project provides a meeting place where artists of several generations and styles can meet and create a musical dialogue. Where does fusion flow into funk? Where does the controlled anarchy of hard be-bop feed into the adrenaline-rush of hard core hip-hop? The answer to these questions and more are found in the spirit of collaboration and discovery on Stolen Moments: Red Hot + Cool. In addition to the straight ahead jazz and rap elements found with on this extraordinary recording, gospel vocals, blues guitar, scat singing, R&B, soul and other African American art forms hug and tug and pull at each other, like relatives at a long overdue reunion. Gender, age, and race are bridged in the three-way effort by Us3, Tony Remy, and Joshua Redman (son of the legendary Dewey Redman). Up-and-coming talents meet one of their heroes in the case of Groove Collective's joint jam with funk master Bernie Worell. Ditto for Me'Shell N'degéOcello's musical studio encounter with Herbie Hancock. Two men from two different eras but with surprisingly similar ears for music join forces in a track by Donald Byrd and Gangstarr's Guru. Add the differences of language and culture into the equation when you consider the distances spanned by Ron Carter's collaboration with Afro-French rapper MC Solaar. The list goes on and on, including contributions by Michael Franti, Digable Planets with Lester Bowie & Wah Wah Watson, The Pharcyde, Roots with Roy Ayers, Incognito, Carleen Anderson with Ramsey Lewis, Umar Bin Hassan and Abiodun Oyewole (formerly of The Last Poets) with Pharoah Sanders, Don Cherry with Watts Prophets, and Branford Marsalis.
