‘The Three Stripe Collection 1985 –1990’

During the 1990s, “The Bristol Sound” became a global phenomenon with albums from Massive Attack, Portishead and Tricky regularly  placed high in polls of the best albums of the decade or indeed of all time. But for those in the know, “The Bristol Sound” had been defined at the tail end of the eighties with a string of releases from the studio of Rob Smith and Ray Mighty.
     Perhaps if they hadn't been so ahead of the field, had released an album instead of a run of singles or if their subsequent signing to a major label had worked out, the names Smith & Mighty would be as well known as those other Bristol artists.

     It's never too late to put the record straight and add another name to the pantheon of Bristol music greats, something they more than deserve. It is with genuine excitement that Bristol Archive Records announce the release of Smith & Mighty, “The Three Stripe Collection 1985-1990”.

The 17 tracks have been personally selected and compiled by Rob Smith and starts with “Walk On” and “Anyone” the two songs that announced the arrival of Smith & Mighty and heralded the coming of “The Bristol Sound”. The tracks selected, comprise a complete overview of the label's two years as an independent, highlighting just how productive and creative the partnership was.  They took musical ingredients from reggae, funk, hip hop, pop, house, soul and anywhere else that inspired them, added a huge amount of talent, skill, originality, a large portion of the Bristol vibe, some primitive digital technology and turned out cutting edge, boundary crossing dance music the likes of which had never been heard before. Being producers they used these songs to showcase the pool of local talent including; Jackie Jackson, Krissy Kriss, MC Kellz and DJ Lynx.

      The majority of these tracks have never been re-released since they appeared as singles more than twenty years ago and for the first time they are gathered together as an album. “The Three Stripe Collection 1985-1990” will be issued on May 14th as a double vinyl LP, CD and digital download,  to borrow from one of the song titles “This Is The Time” to  finally acknowledge the Smith & Mighty legacy and as Krissy Kriss says in that very song, “This is what we call the Bristol Style......just listen”.

In addition to the album release, a one hour music television special will air on public television stations across the United States presented by the Independent Television Service (ITVS) with funds provided by the Corporation for Public Broadcasting. The Stolen Moments: Red Hot + Cool special is a dynamic concert event filled with electric on-stage collaborations and candid discussion. The ITVS broadcast marks the first of the Red Hot Organization's five music projects to be aired on public television. In addition to footage of the live performances, interviews with Professor Cornel West and actor Giancarlo Esposito, and people who are infected with HIV, talking about their experiences and concerns.. It creates a space for frank and necessary discussion about HIV/AIDS."

Produced by The Red Hot Organization for the Independent Television Service (ITVS), Stolen Moments: Red Hot + Cool is the fifth in a series of AIDS benefit musical projects, and the first to air on public television. A fresh and innovative concert special, Stolen Moments melds the classic genre of jazz with today's hip hop featuring the best artists from both worlds together for the first time. But Stolen Moments is more than just a landmark centerstage music event. It's a compelling video montage of what's happening in communities of color around the difficult issues brought on by the stunning rise in AIDS cases in recent years. At a time when media interest in AIDS has ebbed, Stolen Moments: Red Hot + Cool is bound to refuel the debate

The Stolen Moments: Red Hot + Cool project provides a meeting place where artists of several generations and styles can meet and create a musical dialogue. Where does fusion flow into funk? Where does the controlled anarchy of hard be-bop feed into the adrenaline-rush of hard core hip-hop? The answer to these questions and more are found in the spirit of collaboration and discovery on Stolen Moments: Red Hot + Cool. In addition to the straight ahead jazz and rap elements found with on this extraordinary recording, gospel vocals, blues guitar, scat singing, R&B, soul and other African American art forms hug and tug and pull at each other, like relatives at a long overdue reunion. Gender, age, and race are bridged in the three-way effort by Us3, Tony Remy, and Joshua Redman (son of the legendary Dewey Redman). Up-and-coming talents meet one of their heroes in the case of Groove Collective's joint jam with funk master Bernie Worell. Ditto for Me'Shell N'degéOcello's musical studio encounter with Herbie Hancock. Two men from two different eras but with surprisingly similar ears for music join forces in a track by Donald Byrd and Gangstarr's Guru. Add the differences of language and culture into the equation when you consider the distances spanned by Ron Carter's collaboration with Afro-French rapper MC Solaar. The list goes on and on, including contributions by Michael Franti, Digable Planets with Lester Bowie & Wah Wah Watson, The Pharcyde, Roots with Roy Ayers, Incognito, Carleen Anderson with Ramsey Lewis, Umar Bin Hassan and Abiodun Oyewole (formerly of The Last Poets) with Pharoah Sanders, Don Cherry with Watts Prophets, and Branford Marsalis.

I’m more of a fan of Wiley’s harder and heavier music (his track Gangsters is one of my favourite all time hip hop tunes) but the piano on this track is really catchy. The music was made by Richard Turvey www.twitter.com/richardturvey The original was a short track that was on the Zip Files Wiley gave away on Friday. I kept the flavour of the original, extending it out and added some louder and rawer drums to it. 

The track has been supported by many DJ's including Toddla T who played it BBC Radio1 and has been playlisted on Ministry Of Sound radio as well as support on XFM.
