“Ide Were Were” is a sacred prayer to Oshun, the Orisha of love, beauty, fertility, and rivers. Originating in the Lucumí (Santería) tradition of Cuba, with roots in Yoruba spirituality of West Africa, the chant is about adorning oneself with Oshun’s golden bracelets — idé — and the shimmering sound they make as representation of her sweetness and power.

I first heard this at my first Ayahuasca ceremony 10 years ago, during a time when I was closed off from myself and much of life.  Hearing it cracked something open in me, and it has remained an important part of my spiritual journey ever since.  

Ide Were Were calls in abundance, tenderness, beauty, joy, and trust that everything that is meant to be will be.  For me, it carries the reminder that a river does not concern itself about whether it is good enough.  Neither should we.  And if we ever forget, the jangle of Oshun’s bracelets – cheke cheke cheke – serves as a little reminder that we are the river.

My rendition starts, like any river, as a trickle and builds to a roar.  Rivers do not keep themselves small; they take up the space they need to flow where they are called.  I honoring this prayer, I hope to carry forward a little of Oshun’s radiance and the healing it has given me.
