"An important part of touring is the connections you make with different people when travelling around the world. And when going to America, a big part of that experience has been connected to the people around Interdimensional Transmissions and The Bunker NY. While we couldn’t be together in person, I was very glad to be part of Samhain XX streaming online. The set was recorded at my home in Tokyo, but I tried to play how I might have played if I was with everyone in Detroit. Bio:
Filippa Bernander is an up and coming DJ from Gothenburg. She has only been DJ’ing a couple years but has already earned regular slots at Gothenburg underground club Obalans, as a resident. Her sets can be described as deep, driving and hypnotic, travelling between the spheres of darkness and light.

Short interview with Filippa: 

Background/the start:
"I started listening to electronic music about 10 years ago and since then it has just evolved more and more towards techno. I went to my first rave in Stockholm in 2013 and after that I became very curious about the underground scene. I went to different parties, often by myself, just to listen to DJ’s I hadn’t heard before and to discover a new world of music, free from distractions. Quite fast I discovered how broad the spectrum of electronic music could be and I was very inspired from being able to feel such deep emotions that I hadn’t felt before, through listening to deep techno.

2018 I decided to start learning how to DJ myself, so I went out and bought my first CDJ’s and it was the best thing I have done for myself! I realized that I now dared to express my emotions through music, which I hadn’t been able to express before. So playing deep techno has been a form of therapy for me and has made me feel good again and feel peace within myself."

Inspiration:
"I am an emotional and creative person and I easily see details in life. That is something I use when I build my sets and I want to convey a sort of journey where the listener might recognize oneself. I choose my tracks based on my emotions and I am inspired by nature and dreams. I am also inspired by listening to different styles and sub-genres and try to blend them in to my sets to create something new. I am into the driving, darker techno with elements of the melodic, hypnotic and bass-focused styles."

Artist situation:
"I live in Gothenburg, Sweden and I am resident since a year a underground club OBALANS. Since the restrictions have been lightened a bit this summer i have had the pleasure to play at 2 open airs. And now when society is opening up I am looking forward to playing at club again! In the meanwhile I spend my time creating mixes that I post on my soundcloud."

RDC 035 - Sandrien

Marina "Dr" Rubinstein comes at her DJing from the perspective of the dancer. She grew up loving to get down to techno back home in Israeli (though she is Russian born and Berlin based) and will always be a hardcore raver at heart. It means her sets are defined by a certain energetic dynamism that finds her calling on acid, 90s rave and pumping techno to get the floor sweating. She does so at key places like ://about blank and Berghain, and this summer will play Dekmantel Festival. 

Her adventurous spirit and quest for that “special feeling” on the dance floor characterises her mix for us. It is seventy minutes of grooves designed to make you move, from rugged techno to slippery electro via pulsing kick drums that burrow deep into the night. Contrasting dark with light, wild acid with more streamlined sounds and overtly physical tracks with those that are more cerebral, it makes for an arresting trip filled with special dance floor moments.

For techno in Amsterdam, few do it better than Sandrien. The Dutch native has been collecting records in her hometown for the best part of two decades, and became a staple of the city’s underground scene through MAD2 – the club night she ran with friend Carlos Valdes. Building on the success of MAD2 she went onto establish Imprint – the night she’s best known for – which she ran at the much-loved Trouw club up until its closure at the beginning of 2015. In the years since she’s been playing out increasingly beyond the Dutch capital, with 2017 seeing her tour Asia and stop off in Berlin for regular appearances. This rise in popularity is a real testament to her prowess as a selector.

On 14th October she makes her Farringdon debut, so we didn’t hesitate in inviting her to record a mix for us to introduce herself. For her mix, she dropped a carefully-curated selection of ambient, IDM, broken beats and techno, before discussing her record digging habits and the scene in her hometown.

The long method involves a shuffle of the feet that rocks the body back and forth. This is a style favored by fighters with long reach, who use more of jabs and straight shots. The short method sees the fighter move his head and body to the left and right, constantly slipping punches and moving in for closer body shots.

The term shadowboxing is also used in psychology, referring to the process of overcoming a negative self-image which, for example, prevents one from achieving success.
