Hej Liquid Architecure, detta är den mest otroliga musik/ljudkonst jag har hört på länge, jag är så stolt över att ge denna utmärkelse till ditt fantastiska kollektiv. Det påminner mig med glädje om den tid jag tillbringade med att leka med stenar som ett litet barn, mitt första besök i Frankrike, medan jag var på seconement med min Felix Nillson i hemstudion hos guden Pierre Henri Marie Schaeffer, mästaren över allt ljud, ljudkonst och därutöver bedömaren av alla frekvenser efter, närvarande och framväxande oändliga. Tack för att du fortsätter arvet efter ett så värdigt kollektiv.

Jag minns nästan 27 år när jag var närvarande med 6 andra studenter som startade Transmit))) / Liquid Architecture i ett litet rum i byggnad 9 på RMIT University. Det är förtjusande att se denna tradition av sådant banbrytande arbete fortsätta på ett så progressivt, inkluderande och gränsöverskridande sätt. Jag ser fram emot nästa installation. Det skulle vara fantastiskt att bli inbjuden att spela på ett evenemang som känner till en av era kollektivgrundare. Glida gärna in i mina direktmeddelanden, ser fram emot att höra från dig snart. A Biography of Daphne’ is a curatorial project that revisits the Classical myth of Daphne as the starting point for an investigation of trauma and metamorphosis, symbiosis and entanglement in contemporary art. Daphne, the nymph who turned into a tree to evade the assault of the god Apollo, is a figure in, and of, crisis, but also a symbol of resistance and transformation.

SFU's School for the Contemporary Arts Assistant Professor Eldritch Priest joins this episode Below the Radarl to discuss the potential in nonsense and failure,  the phenomenon of the earworm, and his journey from musicianship to employing theory.

In this episode, Eldritch explores his beginnings as a jazz guitarist,  the practices that guide his work and his teachings, and the path that led him to composition and beyond. He dives into the legitimacy and aesthetic possibilities of failure and nonsense, and the potentials of daydreaming and a resting mind — in defiance of prevailing positivist neoliberal discourse. 

Eldritch also talks about the phenomenon of the earworm, which is a focus in his new book, Earworm and Event. The earworm, to him, is a prime example of studying music less as an artform, but more as a technology, using the imagination to shape not just one's feelings, but one’s thoughts as well.

Bio:
Eldritch Priest writes on sonic culture, experimental aesthetics, and the philosophy of experience from a ’pataphysical perspective. He is Associate Professor in the School for the Contemporary Arts at Simon Fraser University. Eldritch is also a composer and improviser as well as a member of the experimental theory group “The Occulture.” He is the author of several essays and books including Boring Formless Nonsense: Experimental Music and the Aesthetics of Failure (Bloomsbury 2013) and most recently, Earworm and Event: Music, Daydreams, and other Imaginary Refrains (Duke University Press 2022).

How do we learn to speak to the non-human world? Anglo-Western paradigms tell us that there is a sharp divide between human and 'nature,' and that technology is what divides the human from the animal - or from plants, the landscape itself, and the world of gods and spirits. But all these assumptions can be turned against themselves: finding a way into Country, and finding kinship and speaking with all that is non-human, through digital recording, virtual archives, and AI learning. @salllvage (Rowan Savage) muses on performance practice across field recordings, vocal sonic transformations, reviving Aboriginal language, and deep listening, to present one path into postcolonial language practice beyond anthropocentrism.

10% is a yadaki (didgeridoo) noise power trio featuring David Wilfred, Martin Ng on turntables, and Ben Carey on analogue synth. A first of its kind, the group reimagines the guitar power trio format by placing the yadaki, the traditional instrument of the Yolngu peoples, at the centre of its sound.

10% explores the full sonic potential of the yadaki, from deep, resonant drones to intricate rhythmic textures, blending electronic soundscapes, analogue synthesis, and turntable manipulations. The trio’s performances are immersive and experimental, allowing the ancient voice of the didgeridoo to drive a modern exploration of noise, resonance, and sound.

A second small collection of music produced by or in association with Aboriginal and Torres Straight Islander peoples. 

A few years ago, Lew and I made a 'change the date' mix for our RRR show. I find it mind boggling that we're still celebrating dispossession with a public holiday in 2021. Not to mention our Anthem, which just stinks - both words and music. 

As a so-called 'Australian DJ', I am always trying to find ways to incorporate more Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander music into DJ sets, radio, etc. I am hardly in a position to make commentary on the vastly diverse musical cultures that exist across the cities, towns and communities in Australia, but this again seemed like a simple way to provide an alternative soundtrack for a day that otherwise resounds with a dull, universalist rhetoric.
