Liquid Beat Records is proud to announce the debut digital and vinyl EP from Portland, OR based producer HOT16, entitled “1983”.

Utilizing a wide variety of production techniques that includes samples, drum machines, keyboards, and additional live players, HOT16 has crafted a unique sound that lovingly references the 80s & 90s while simultaneously maintaining a modern edge.

Of course, the production is only half the story of “1983”.  Featured on the EP is a varied group of extremely talented singers and emcees that help bring the project to life.  Included on the release are collaborations with MC Melodee, Vursatyl (from Lifesavas), Reva DeVito, Swan Coltrane & Thaddeus David (from Seattle’s Moor Gang), and Ronnie & EPP (from TxE).

“1983” is a funky, soulful record that captures the spirit of the golden era of R&B and Hip-Hop and reimagines it for modern times with magnificent results.

HOT16 feat. Reva DeVito - (You Don't) Realize

Today marks an important day in history. Known as "De La Day" throughout the hip hop community, 3/3/23 marks the 35th Anniversary of De La Soul's Debut Album " 3 Feet High and Rising". It also marks a new age for De La and their fans as all of their music is now available on streaming services along with limited edition physical releases. After the long fight over royalty percentages and ownership of their music, paired with the recent passing of Trugoy The Dove, we can only imagine the whirlwind that Maceo, Pos and Prince Paul are facing. 

We wanted to revamp our series The 10s with a special, long overdue dedication and thank you to De La Soul and our supporters. "Plug Tunes" focuses on a few of De La's lesser known features as well as some known classics. The daisy flower symbolizes new beginnings as well as innocence and purity. De La gracefully mastered their own sound and lane that represents that perfectly.

This mix was inspired by a Little Brother interview I read a few years ago. In the interview, I remember the interviewer asked the group why they went with the name "Little Brother." The group replied that they chose the name because they felt that musically, they were the "little brother" of groups like ATCQ, De La Soul, and Slum Village. In the spirit of that interview, I put together a 40 minute mix of Tribe, De La, and Slum V classics titled "Big Brother."
