Terra Firma made a big splash when their first compilation release: Terra Firma Vol: 1. dropped back in May. Fast forward 8 months and it's time for round 2! With 10 artists featured, 8 of them new to the label, this sonically rich compilation is a serious statement of intent from the label. 

We get underaway with the mystical 'No Grudge', a collaboration made with passion from Dutchman Pulsate and his Flemish neighbour Nexus & Tight. This is a song for those long journeys. Terra Firma welcomes another new duo to the label in Nemy & Missing. Their deep, soulful and innovative approach to Drum & Bass is reminiscent of heavyweights Alix Perez and Spectrasoul, and track 'Did to Me' ticks all the boxes for a perfect techy roller. 

Having released on Vol. 1, Ben Downton, aka Low:r, is at it again with another major-key groove-busting anthem. Featuring Carl Petros on vocals, 'Pushing Back the Tide' is instantly uplifting with its warm piano chords. Next up, Terra Firma's very own Matt Horton debuts on the label he set up with Warren Rousseau in 2017. Along with Telomic, the tune entitled 'Ingrained' features a soft bed of engrossing melodic textures with crisp drums and a dynamic bassline on top. 

East-Midlands bass-heads Steven Mitchell & Joshua Gerry debut on the label with what can only be described as a shoe-thrower! The aggressive bassline and super-punchy drums in 'Volvere' utilise space incredibly well and satisfy our Jump-Up cravings. Finally, we have 'Soul Switch', a moody little liquid gem from up-comer Tarz. Here we have a bit of everything, from an oscillating deep bassline, to bouncy drums, and synth stabs in the higher-register. Sophisticated.

‘Narrative EP’

During the initial explosion of drum & bass, labels like CIA have helped define the genre and shape its trends from the very beginning. Having been involved with the scene for over a decade, alongside its label bosses Total Science, they’ve time and time again provided a creative hub for likeminded pioneers and artists who are only just creating their place within its trenches. And for their next offering, CIA are bringing London and Manchester based trio Arcatype into the imprint’s groundbreaking roster for forthcoming EP ‘Narrative’. It features four-tracks of articulate and finely crafted drum & bass, highlighting the sonic appeal of Arctatype and the versatility shown through CIA’s discography. 
‘Narrative’ featuring renowned vocalist Riya adds a humanistic twist to the track listing. Having already graced CIA’s back catalogue with her own ‘Hurt Heals’ EP in 2017, she makes a welcome return, with her softly-spoken crescendsos and emotive undertones. Her voice juxtaposes perfectly with Arcatype’s sweeping and meticulous production signature, nodding to lighter evenings and the changing weather. Then you’re pulled into ‘Levitate’, with crunching kick drum and keyed notes rolling you into a sense of security. Snipped up vocal samples sit ethereally against the mix, before you’re dropped into quickly switching segments and moody subs - manufactured for the dancefloor, ‘Levitate’ is sure to marker any late night set. 
‘Yakima Dub’ continues to set the tone, heavily focusing on its scuttling percussion and steep, break-lead build ups. ‘Yakima Dub’ cascades with every drum skit, moving you deep into its composition before crackling LFO pushes a jagged edge. Closing the EP is the techno-infused underpinnings of opening record ‘Hämeenlinna’, drawing out on rising synth, flickers of metallic percussion and swatches of rattling bass stabs, before it finally breaks into a driving rhythm. The track highlights Arcatype’s stylistic features, fully submerging you in their intricate sounds. Each track provides a different side to Arcatype, one which was crafted through the merging of three minds. Given a creative hub by the likes of CIA Records, they’re looking to extend their influence across the drum & bass world’s tastemakers; that’s something their forthcoming EP will certainly help achieve.
