브람스는 현악 6중주를 단 2개만 작곡했다. 브람스는 현악 6중주를 통해서 하이든, 베토벤, 슈베르트에 대한 존경심을 표현하고 있을 뿐 아니라, 브람스 이전에는 거의 작곡되지 않았던 악기 편성을 통해서 새로운 화성적인 표현의 영역을 확장했다. 실내악적인 은밀함과 매력을 지닌 이 현악 6중주는 최후의 낭만주의 ‘문’을 열었다.
