Birds and cicadas singing in a mature forest on Palawan island

On Bamboo Forest, some of the pieces are Shakuhachi solo, while in others I have expanded the spirit and the soul of this bamboo flute to include a wider musical experience. It is really an art to create sound with the Shakuhachi, and because of that, because it’s so free there is a very wide spectrum in the sound. You can change it, you can alter it, you can stretch it, you can push something, you can be very forceful or you can be incredibly soft and sweet.

Fragile Air

Life abounds in the exotic and beautiful rainforests of Sulawesi - one of the largest islands in the Indonesian archipeligo. Here time has stood still, revealing the evolution of nature through a unique diversity of birds and animals.

In humid lowlands we hear fruit pigeons, orioles, monarch flycatchers and a magnificent pair of hornills. Further inland, hill forests reach deep into the remote heart of the island. The booming calls of imperial pigeons carry across the valleys, squirrels call from high in the canopy and the eerie voices of piping crows echo through the forests.

We climb high into the mountains, the realm of the cloud forests. Flocks of birds move through the forest calling in the morning sunshine. Finally, night falls on a land where mystery and the unusual are everywhere - Sulawesi.

Kubah's forests are pulsing with life, and the soundscapes that can be heard in this national Park are among the most incredible I have ever experienced. This recording features the incredibly powerful sounds of Empress cicadas, along with the melodic song of the White-rumped Shama, and the rhythmic ' te-hoop 'calls of Golden-whiskered Barbets.
