This is a recording of some interactions on a black grouse lek in the highlands of Scotland. 

It was recorded with a Sony M10 and a matched pair of Clippy EM172 mics.

Rain is to be expected on a rainforest expedition and Costa Rica is no exception. Recording soundscapes in the rainforests and cloud forests of this beautifully green Central American country reminds me of previous jungle experiences and also teaches me a few new lessons. Celebrating my first International Dawn Chorus Day in Nairobi, where I'm usually woken up by Pied Crows, House Sparrows and Hadadas...and very audible traffic noise in the distance. So, I'm sharing a mixed chorus from one of my most memorable camping expeditions in Kitobo Forest, away from city noise pollution. Ideally dawn chorus is majorly orchestrated by birds but this is not always guaranteed. This day we were woken up by a mix of Black and white Colobus Monkeys and Red-capped Robin-chats, which made a beautiful dawn chorus. Enjoy every little bit of nature's music wherever you are.

The far southeast corner of mainland Australia, known as East Gippsland, is a region of mountain eucalypt forests, lowland dry scleraphyl woodlands, coastal heaths and, in sheltered locations, pockets of temperate rainforest. It is to one of these pockets that this recording takes us.

The tanin-stained waters of an esturine creek flow silently, almost imperceptibly, soon to join the lower reaches of the Wallagaraugh River. Its banks are lined with a gallery forest of tall euclypts and dense shrubby understory. Occasionally a fish splashes in the dark water.

In the predawn darkness, a Yellow-bellied Glider calls while parachuting among the treetops, a Sooty Owl gives a distinctive whistle, a Koala grunts distantly and the first birdsong is heard. As the dawn chorus gathers pace, Yellow Robins, Golden Whistlers, Honeyeaters, Kookaburras, Wonga Pigeons, Fantails and Whipbirds join in.

After the chorus ebbs, we hear the delicate song of Rose Robins, the tinkling of Bell Miners, Lyrebirds, King Parrots, Spinebills, Lewin Honeyeaters and Currawongs, while Bassian Thrushes give high-frequency trills while foraging among the leaf litter close by.

It really is a spectacular palette of bird sounds. This continuous recording ends with the sharp, piping calls of a tiny Azure Kingfisher and it flies like an irridescent arrow up the waterway.

[Experiment] Trying the Shure MV88 mic on a iPhone for field recording (nature).   Not that I would want to do this very often, but it could be useful when better mics/recorders are not available in a given moment.   The photo shows the location where this recording was made (holding the iPhone, standing about 5 feet from the grass in lower middle of photo).

[Setup] Shure MV88 on an iPhone 10 with foam windscreen. Settings on app:  mid-side mode, max compression, flat EQ,   The quality is not bad for what it is.

The Shure MV88 is *not* a sensitive mic and certainly not great for nature field recording.  The manual even says it was designed to record in very loud environments like concerts, so it would not be good for recording a quiet soundscape.   However, for loud environments it seems OK.   These cricket frogs were so loud that I wore the headphones for ear protection even when not recording.  Without ear protection the frog calls were painfully loud (to give an idea of the ambient sound levels being recorded).

BTW, on an iPhone X I was not able to find a way to monitor audio while recording.  Gain was set by watching the meter on the app.  On phones that have plug-in headphones, apparently there is a way to monitor audio while recording.
