Figuration Libre – the first music compilation in my new series.

Free Figuration is an art movement that emerged in the early 1980s. The term "free figuration" was coined by the French artist Ben Vautier. This movement often incorporated elements of comics and graffiti, vibrant colors, and grotesque, caricature-like figures.

The foremost proponents of this style were Keith Haring and Jean-Michel Basquiat. From 1982 to 1985, these legendary artists exhibited their own works, along with those of like-minded creators in the genre of "free figuration," in cities such as New York, London, Pittsburgh, Paris, and beyond. Haring and Basquiat, as if declaring the universality of free figuration, extended their artistry to creating club decor, notably for venues like Paradise Garage in New York City.

Moreover, thanks to their influence, graffiti began to find a place not only in the interiors of nightlife venues but also on the bodies of performers. It is well-known that Haring and Basquiat painted the bodies of Grace Jones and Madonna before their debut concerts, thus introducing, in the early 1980s, the trend of body art—an art form now widely embraced in nightclubs and fashion shows around the world. Beyond this, sensing the rise of club culture, both artists mastered the art of DJing.

The DJ compilation series "Free Figuration" represents my personal take on a vast and eclectic spectrum of music that, for various reasons, I cannot play during my sets in dance and nightclubs. Tracks are layered onto the canvas of the mix like paints, chaotically yet purposefully, embodying the series' core idea: complete freedom from genres.

This is a compilation where jazz, mambo, hip-hop, electronic, symphonic, and other subgenres coexist effortlessly, reaffirming the words of the great Freddie Mercury: "Music is an open window; it knows no labels or stereotypes." Enjoy the listening experience!
