AFTERBURN was a collaborative event between Aubry Villaver (Mothers Milk) and Andy le Max (Phony Studio). Presented at the special Silence Please in New York, on 10th September 2025.

Aubry and I have spoken for a while about collaborating, and for me, the starting point was the idea of ritual.

In my practice, there’s a ritual in building sound, sculpting sound, performing with sound. And I feel there’s a real connection with Aubry’s work too. The gradual ritual of her shaping her candles, the scent, the materials.

There’s also the ritual of experience. The ritual of putting a record on, or lighting a candle, creating an environment.

Afterburn was the practice of our two disciplines. Something that has been built over hours, over days, over years. A lot of the sounds I used in the performance were recordings of Aubry making her candles.
