The first instalment of a brand new audio-essay of Kodwo Eshun’s 1998 book ‘More Brilliant Than The Sun: Adventures In Sonic Fiction’. Much sought after since it’s initial publication, ‘More Brilliant’ was a concerted attempt to change the relationship between writing and music. 

Throughout the work, which is situated between electronic music history, media theory, science fiction and Afrodiasporic studies, Eshun constructs an alternative (non-linear) timeline of 20th century music, traversing jazz, dub, techno, funk, hip-hop and jungle. 

The text mobilises what Eshun sees as the theoretical tendencies inherent to the output of artists such as Sun Ra, Lee Perry, Ramellzee, Funkadelic, 4hero and The Jungle Brothers, and open the possibilities of sonic fiction: the hitherto unexplored intersections between science fiction and organised sound.

Seattle-based CCL (@ccl-tuf) is a DJ, promoter and curator. They’re a founding member of TUF, a local collective focused on community-building and creating visibility for underrepresented artists in dance music. Known for bold musical choices, CCL blends a caleidoscope of rhythms, usually playing a mixture of deep, immersive breaks, electro, techno and bass music. Long time underground legend Dan Curtin once again delivers some hot property, that electronic music tastemakers and revered diggers will have a joy in adding to their bag. The sought after '99 release Spatial Relationships sees the light of day once more, remastered and repressed. An integral release from the American producers back catalogue on the vital Metamorphics Recordings. Opener Crazy Life is an energetic brew of dancing drums and busy hits all run through with some superbly cosmic synths. It is electrifying to say the least. She Thinks She's So Smooth is a hi tech house cut with exquisite drum programming and tripped out synths and chords that lend it a late night feel. It is filled with machine soul and future vibes and then gets followed by An Up The Wall Drive, which is pure Motor City techno with its warped bass and hyperdrive hits all underpinned by slick drum work. This is a timeless masterpiece from this long time pioneer, if you are not familiar with this one already, sit tight and enjoy the ride.
