Incredible as it seems, this year marks twenty years since the launch of Johnny D’Mairo’s Henry Street Music label. To celebrate, BBE is marking the occasion with a sumptuous five- disc CD retrospective, a fitting tribute to one of the most important of all house labels. This is one of the most extensive grand summations yet done of a dance label.
Henry Street Music exemplified its era as much as Trax and Nu-Groove had theirs. Come the mid-‘90s, the disco cut-up became ubiquitous, as thousands tried to emulate the success of Henry Street’s first big killer, The Bucketheads’ Tha Bomb –still a dancefloor staple two decades on.
Many of the movers and shakers of the day had their best moments on Henry Street, and they’re all here: Johnnick, Armand Van Helden, DJ Duke, DJ Sneak, Dirty Harry, Davidson Ospina, Todd Terry, Mateo and Matos, Brutal Bill, Josh Wink, even the UK’s own Ashley Beedle, and many more –a veritable roll-call of the premiere-league of dance at the time, an era when dance music still seemed incredibly fertile and the link with its own past was still vital.
Some of the American originals can struggle to get props among the countless mutations of house out there vying for attention in today’s digitalized dance scene, but the real house-heads always knew to check them, and will recognize this as quality product, through and through.

Henry Street (named after Brooklyn homeboy Johnny’s neighbourhood) always had a ‘New York’ vibe, and even when drawing its producers from further afield, the label encapsulated the city’s melting-pot of talent and raw, bristling energy... energy captured here, and exploding off these remastered tracks like it’s 1999 all over again!

Alongside the massive dancefloor anthems from the likes of Kenny Dope and Armand Van Helden are some real gems that got away, some exclusive mixes, and the thoughts of Johnny D, one of the prime-movers of the New York dance scene even before he came up with his own label, responsible for countless hits as promotions man and as dance A&R at Atlantic. Never one for the limelight, Johnny’s own story is nonetheless inextricably bound up with the transition from disco through house to the ubiquity of dance music today.
So... dust off those dancing shoes, and get ready to feel the heat, it’s one more time for the Henry Street Hustle!

Groove Line Records release the first in a series of officially licensed disco remix 12”s. Starting with two exceptional disco remixes of the Change classics, “It’s A Girl’s Affair” and “Searching”, by Mike Maurro, whose recent The Mike Maurro Peak Hour Remixes box set has cemented the New York producer’s reputation as one of the most respected disco remixers on the scene right now. 

As one of the most innovative dance groups of the early 1980s Change scored several R&B, disco and pop hits including the number one disco classics, “A Lover’s Holiday” and “The Glow Of Love,” and helped launch the solo career of Luther Vandross due to his exceptional vocal performance on another of the group’s number one disco hits, “Searching.”
 
Side A features “It’s A Girl’s Affair (Mike Maurro Disco Remix),” also included as an exclusive track on Groove Line’s 2CD Change Anthology Reach For The Sky from 2015. Originally released on the groups debut album The Glow Of Love from 1980, “It’s A Girls Affair” features the powerhouse vocals of the legendary Jocelyn Brown as she sends out a rallying call to the “girls” to take over the dance floors of the world above a dynamic, sophisticated euro dance groove complete with futuristic synth swells and dramatic breakdowns. The Mike Maurro Remix brings out all the best elements of the original recording creating a tight, punchy disco interpretation.  

Side B features “Searching (Mike Maurro Disco Remix),” the track famed for introducing Luther Vandross’s velvet tones to a wider audience on both sides of the Atlantic. Regarded as the quintessential Vandross vocal performance “Searching,” also from debut album The Glow Of Love, heralded a new era in R&B/Dance due to both the fully realised melodic story of the lyric and the (at the time) unorthodox, rolling dance floor groove created by Change. Maurro employs his signature remixing styles to mesmerising effect here allowing the dancer to become immersed in the groove as each element is added at just the right time in order to keep propelling the track forward before every care is given to allow Vandross’s faultless and encapsulating vocal to take centre stage.       

All Groove Line Records releases are fully licensed and cut at Half Speed by Matt Colton at Alchemy (Mastering Engineer of the Year 2013). All vinyl is heavy weight 180g manufactured by Optimal Media in Germany, one of the world’s finest pressing plants.

This dub was the favorite of all the mixes. Most the guitars you hear i had to put into the sampler since i only had 4 digital tracks at the time. It was mixed on my cheap analog mixer... Vivian Sessoms is the singer here. She just improvised off the original vocal. It's probably her first take. With her i don't think i ever went over 2 takes. She is great to work with.
