DEE-JAY SHUGA | Sugar Shack Radio , Orange Earth Music

A Chicago transplant in the Wild West, Dee-Jay Shuga is a lover of all things house. Shuga's passion for music started in childhood, a child of two young music-loving parents with large and eclectic record collections. She was always obsessed with rhythm and dancing, and that love eventually moved her toward playing instruments. She studied classical music and composition in the late 80s and won medals for her classical flute performances. Although she gave up playing by high school, her love of music manifested itself in different forms, and in the early 90s, she discovered house music.

In 2001, Shuga married her husband, Hedspin, who was a long-time dj himself, and they used their wedding money to buy a brand new pair of Technics. By the end of the year, with a romanticized notion of playing together as a husband-and-wife team, she began to try her hand at mixing. Her approach to learning how to dj was the same as it was when she learned to play the flute: obsessive. Too embarrassed to play in front of her husband, she would mix in their basement while he was at work or out for the day, recording on a tape deck and listening to the mixes over and over again to figure out how to do better . She went from a couple minutes of clean mixing per tape to handing out her first mix CD within a year. Over time, after years of playing wide-ranging house genres and techno, she developed her own mixing style and found her signature sound: good, driving basslines, smooth vocal samples and a warm, techy feel.

In the years since she started playing, Shuga has been grateful to have shared decks and line-ups with some of the biggest names in house music. She has played everywhere from house & loft parties to outdoor events, clothing stores, bars & clubs in and around the Midwest and Chicago, including Smartbar and Zentra, and held a residency with other female djs at Lava Lounge. Recently, she has had guest mixes air on the radio in the UK, on record labels out of the US and Mexico, and on internet radio shows in the US and Canada, with a current monthly residency on Sugar Shack Radio. She has also started handling marketing and A & R for Chicago house label Orange Earth Music and will soon begin the long process of learning the art and skill of music production.
