An ethereal, unresolved presence fading into the stereo field, Hilja breathes into life with a haunted synth line and self-sampling vocal hook that instantly creates an enchanted space. Hilja is the debut album by Glasgow-based musician Maria Rossi aka Cucina Povera. Named after a style of southern Italian traditional cooking associated with precarity and making-do, a philosophy of simplicity and stoicism that applies perfectly to the spare but beautiful music Rossi experiments with. Hilja’s marriage of minimal synth, field recordings and the hymnal dexterity of Rossi’s vocal performances creates a new language, sometimes literally, to be spoken in some mythological Fourth World we’ve yet to create.
 
Originally from Finland, Rossi brings an acute sense of space, surroundings, and practicality to her working practice, with each composition often relying on a limited sound palette to create deeply affecting messages which transcend language. Cucina Povera’s power is to communicate purely, often down to the solo-choir nature of Rossi’s multi-layered voice, an achingly beautiful instrument which has seems to have an innate spirituality in its grain. The tension between the means and the end is at the heart of Cucina Povera, the invocation of a kind of secular spirituality at times using nothing but Rossi’s voice. Indeed there’s almost a Dogme-like purity to the arrangements: Elektra is a soothing song based around the lapping waves of Rossi’s wordless backing vocals and a simple field recording of stones knocked together. Kehoitus is completely a cappella, a haunted fairytale told in glossolalia, evoking a quasi-religious experience with very little.
 
For music often minimal and simple there’s a boldness that belies Hilja’s status as a debut. Rossi allows each word, each sound and rhythm to exist in its own space, finding its own relationship with its surroundings. Mesikämmenen Veisu is perhaps the most ecclesiastical sounding composition here; burbling water trickles below a virtuoso vocal, with incredible arrangements in several registers undulating above. A meditation to relieve hunger and restriction, it’s a perfect summing up of Hilja, a music ambient but completely earthed, finding enchantment in what you have to hand, the realism of magic, the magic of realism.

I really enjoyed the dark atmosphere in Paul Austers novel 'In the Country of Last Things' and had the idea to compile an 'imaginary' soundtrack in the spirit of this book.

Altogether this mixtape is meant to be like a walk through devastated cityscapes in a collapsed dystopian society, where people are desperately searching the ruins/streets for food and other essential items. Therefore I used some spatial soundscapes and field-recordings which describe a soiled environmental (for instance: footsteps on broken glass + demolished bricks, vague remnants from radios or turntables with crackling vinyl, sounds from burning objects etc.. ), sometimes accompanied by experimental use of human voice.

Synopsis to Paul Austers novel 'In the Country of Last Things' (1987)

"A postapocalyptic quest set against a backdrop of urban deprivation. The masses are homeless, theft is so rampant it is no longer a crime, and death — by arranging either suicide or assassination — is the only way out. Buildings collapse daily, driving huge numbers of citizens into the streets, where they starve or die of exposure — if they aren't murdered by other vagrants first. Government forces haul away the bodies, and licensed scavengers collect trash and precious human waste. Weird cults form around the most popular methods of suicide. Anne Blume comes to this unnamed city in search of her brother and finds friendship — even love — amid the devastation."

"If, like many others, your introduction to Black Merlin began only from the point of the highly successful Hipnotik Tradisi, your curiosity might have been piqued enough to attempt a little digging of your own, only to be gobsmacked once you realize that you’d been missing out on 90% of a highly productive, almost a decade long career that had preceded the Black Merlin stage name. By the time his jungle-infected LP arrived, Thompson had already carved out several niches for himself in various corners of the electronic music world.

Way back in 2008, Thompson was already making music as one half of Spectral Empire, a duo act with fellow Brit Kyle Martin. Since then, and in between his solo creations as Black Merlin, he has collaborated with partners under no less than two other guises (Kommune, Karamika). His musical catalogue is nothing short of spectacular, having released on such diverse labels as Omnidisc, Bird Scarer Records, Island of The Gods, LN-CC, Common Thread, Pinkman, Berceuse Heroique, SORN, ESP Institute, Boysnoize Records and Jealous God, among others. The recurring theme here appears to be one of constant reinvention, as the genres he has dabbled with oscillates from warped spacey disco, synth-driven krautrock, droney minimal wave, retrogressive EBM, to the hypnotic dark techno of recent years.
From the outside looking in, Thompson’s career trajectory thus far appears to have been less dictated by fickle industry trends and more intrinsically motivated. Running on his own internal clock, he’s been releasing music and reinventing himself at a steady and relentless pace both before and after Hipnotik Tradisi brought his name to the forefront. Few musicians would be tempted to stray from a formula that has tasted success. Not Black Merlin. Following hot on the heels of his 2016 tour de force are already two completely different records by Thompson, all within the span of a year. Clearly, he wasted little time basking in past glory.
Any bid to decode this artist and reduce him to a mere label for one’s own categorizing convenience would be a futile endeavor; it’s akin to a cynic’s vain attempt to deconstruct and unravel one magician’s trick: you’ll likely come out none the wiser and risk missing out on the pure and simple appreciation of his art form. Much better to let each of his music pieces speak for itself."
